20 Dogs to be Removed from Mural

New business owners taking over Stirling Tropical Wines have plans to remove about 20 dog portraits, according to Murals for Mutts, Inc.

Update: New business owner Luanne Haver says in the comment section of this article that she is working with artist Anna Hamilton to have some of the paintings moved to other businesses in Dunedin. Anna asks that any owners with questions about their pet's portrait contact Muralsformutts@gmail.com.

———

Murals for Mutts, Inc., broke the news to its Facebook fans late Friday.

Some of the beloved animal portaits featured in a downtown mural may be lost.

New business owners reportedly told Murals for Mutts that renovation plans at Stirling Tropical Wines may affect about 20 portraits.

"The animals on the bottom of the wall will remain," Murals for Mutts told its Facebook followers.

Murals for Mutts, run by managing director Dawn Carney and artist Anna Hamilton, is a group that raises money for nonprofits through public artwork.

The Dogedin mural project, which is also on the outside wall at Skip's Bar & Grill, raised money for Dunedin Doggie Rescue. Pet owners paid between $50 to $100, depending on size, for each animal to be painted into the mural. The project began about three years ago.

"As we all know nothing in public art is permanent. Although we expected more time (as promised by previous owners) but this is beyond our control," Murals for Mutts said.

More than 100 pets are painted at the Stirling Tropical Wines mural.

"We are sorry to be losing any of the animal portraits and know how special they are. We are grateful that the new owner was willing to compromise enough to save some from being painted over," Murals for Mutts wrote.

A professional photographer took photos of the animals and will provide a digital copy to owners should their pet get covered. Owners may contact the group at muralsformutts@gmail.com. The group is posting photos of some of the affected animal portraints on its Facebook page.

This is a developing story. Please stay with Dunedin Patch for updates.

The two dogs in the picture is Petey and Auggie Poliquin. So much apart of my parents and brothers life. Dunedin is such a dog friendly town. These two wonderful animals are missed and I is great to see them enjoying Dunedin each day. Please boycott this business for no embracing the culture of Dunedin. I want to support local businesses but I will not when they don't support the locals.

As the new owner being demonized and unapproached for comment I want to say that Anna and I have worked together organizing the relocation of about 10-15 dogs most of which would still stay on our or Skip's Main St wall. This wall has a total of 41 dogs. Sorry to see most are not open to hearing from us. We have been reaching out to other Main St shop owners to spread out the distribution of these beloved pets with no takers yet so agreed to again work with Anna. This response is show all have been misformed.

Ms. Owner
What is the new plan for the wall?
How will it fit with the Downtown decor/vibe/theme?
I was simply commenting on the content of the article, which only offered the owners with a digital photo of the memories they paid for.

Hello Luanne, I am so sorry for this unwelcome and rude experience you have had from Dunedin and feel ashamed of Dunedin for all the negative comments directed toward you. I have lived here most of my life and feel this is a warm city with loving people. You did nothing wrong by investing your efforts and life here, unfortunately some people have an axe to grind because they are just unhappy people, so they blame others. I hope the best for you :)

Yes, this is not a bad thing. Please be respectful to the new owner. We have worked together on this. Some will be moved others will have professional pictures done. please contact Muralsformutts@gmail.com if you have any concern about your pets portrait. Some of the changes have to be done because of damage to the walls. I would rather make this a celebration of the dogs than a negative thing. Please remember that every donation helped a homeless animal and to raise awareness for local animal rescues.

Anna, Thank you for your perspective, though it seems most of us who love the murals respectfully disagree. Removing some so walls can be damages is a natural progression of a building BUT for new owners to remove so they can repaint - too soon and poor timing choice by them - new business owners. Dunedin is a dog town. They would have been far better served to have opened their business, gained the respect of the town, which will provide a sizable chunk of their business (NO NOT) then emabarked upon their redcorating. Their business advisor gave them so no so good advice. The dogs have been a wonderful celebration and the donations have helped and now the new owners are just going to paid right over all that. It is too too soon. Good Luck to them with their new business venture, they certainly are facing some no so happy possible customers.....

Wow, What happened to property rights? Maybe the new owners want a different look for their business. Don't be so fast to bury someones dreams and hard work. These are good people with apirations of being a positive force in Dunedin. They could have opened a business in another town; but choose Dunedin. That in itself indicates their respect and feelings for our city. It's not the sign or pictures out front, it's the sign and warmth inside their hearts that really matters. Lets support them and welcome our new business neighbors.

Technically we are painting over some of the animals. The ones that will be removed are higher up on the wall and to the far left of the building. I am going to relocated them but it will not happen over night so I felt it important to let people know ahead of time what was happening. The ones that are going to be removed will either be repainted below or at Skip's. It will take time so I ask that everyone please be patient. We will be posting pictures on our Facebook page of the animals that will be affected.

I'm surprised no one from the Patch spoke to me first and a collabrative piece of information could have been printed. I have had this business since June 1 and as Anna can confirm I had no intention of wrecklessly painting over a pet. This story is causing unnecessary panic. I'm willing to work with anyone.

I think it is great that Anna and the new owner can work together. It is also nice of Murals for Mutts to paint the dogs that need removed else where. I can understand that people are upset, however, it seems the owner and Anna are doing the best they can to please everyone. The most important thing is that the money that went to putting these dogs up there went to help homeless dogs. Dogs that did not have a family to put them on these walls to begin with, a family that loved them so much to have them painted. They had no one, and Mural for Mutts offered this wonderful thing to give them food, vaccines, and other needs. Please look at the big picture here. If your dog is one that needs removed, contact Mural for Mutts, they will do whatever they can to please you.

After it is all said and done I do think the owners and mutts for murals will do the right thing. This is a true example of media buzz and I am guilty of falling for it. I am disappointed in the Patch for reporting 1/3 of the story. In the future all of the facts should be checked before publishing a "breaking story". I am not supporting the owner, Anna will do the right thing because of the cause and the Patch should be ashamed and it's credibility is compromised.

Hi Andrew, thank you for your support of Murals for Mutts, but in the defense if the Patch, they really only used what we posted on our Facebook page to make this article. On our Facebook post I did omit the fact that I would be relocating the affected animals. The post was to let people know that there was to be painting done next week and some animals would be affected. I felt it my responsibility to the legacy of the animals and the people who have supported our mission to make it public. Once we figured out which ones would be affected I could contact the owners and get them a photograph until I was able to relocated them, either in a different location on the existing mural or on another mural in Dunedin. Repainting the animals will take time but they all will find new homes. We are working with the owner to keep the number of animals minimal. The building needs to be repainted, I will be out there cutting in around all of their little heads and bodies but the fact is, it is not possible to repaint the building and keep all of them where they are. Back to the Patch article, yes it is not quite the whole story they would have got if they asked me first, but they did take what we made public on our Facebook as reference. Stay tuned to the follow up. Thanks

I don't have a "dog" in this race, but am amazed how many people attempt to selfishly control situations that are really none of their friggin' business. Then when these "meddlers" do not get their way, they gin-up some drama, become hostile and attempt to inflict harm by boycotting a wonderful local business. WTF?

This psychotic need to "control, get my way at any cost or destroy them" is a behaviorial disorder commonly found in left-wing liberal democrats. (I had to add that last part :-) I have a great idea . . .Why don't some of these " outraged meddlers" use their "super-power of influence" for good instead of evil by trying to recruit some downtown businesses to share the wealth and culture of these portraits? That's just my opinion, I could be wrong . . .

By the way Larry, as a long-time Dunedin resident, property owner, community volunteer and donor I'm pretty sure I do "get it." Dunedin is wonderful little community that has worked hard gaining a national, if not worldwide reputation for "tolerance" and "freedom." However, there seems to be a handful of "intolerant" thugs making financial threats against one of our local businesses who want to exercise their own "freedom" by updating their business decor.. Sounds kind of crazy, doesn't it . . .

The business owner has agreed to keep the murals, yet you continue to re-ignite the torch on this witch-hunt. Why the hostility and intolerance for a local business exercising their freedom? Please stop attempting to utilize "bully tactics" to impose your opinion on this matter.

Do you own a home? Do you own a Car? How about a business? I have a feeling that your affection for this artwork would rapidly diminish if you were faced with the sole responsibility of displaying them on your property.
