Are Mitt Romney's Tax Returns Fair Game?

Amid calls for Mitt Romney to reveal more financial information, should presidential candidates be required to disclose their income tax returns?

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has released his 2010 tax return and an estimate of his 2011 return, but for some critics, that's not enough.

From a recent Washington Post editorial to President Barack Obama's campaign ads, the calls for Romney to reveal more of his financial information have gotten louder as the campaign season continues.

Presidential candidates aren't required to disclose their tax returns, as Reuters points out, although it's become common practice. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have released tax returns dating back to 2000, and Romney's father, George, released 12 years of returns when he ran for president back in 1968.

What's your take?

Should Romney and other presidential candidates be forced to release their tax returns?

Is this information too personal, or too important for voters to be kept private?

Though I do agree unless he has committed Tax Fraud he doesn't need to disclose more. Which isn't what they are charging him with.

He is applying for the most public office in this country, the agrument of personal business is invalid.

Jeff,

They are both hiding stuff you don't get to this level of politics without hiding stuff. But you are throwing more conpiracy stuff than actual facts.

The giving to bankrupt companies, both Obama and Bush have done it in order to spike the economy. Romney will end up doing the same, just because you have to take those gambles in business.

Do I care about Romney's tax returns? Not unless he has committed Tax Fraud, which isn't what is being asked.

He's got all the things money can buy, except the Presidency. It's confuses me why VERY RICH MEN want to be a leader of our country or state. Both he and our Govenor have enough money to buy small countries and run them however they see fit. But I suppose it's just the Power. At least Bush, although wealthy, still needed to be President in order to better himself to the millions that Romney has. But he did and he GOT IT. Where is BUSH now? Oh hiding.

Yes, he should...especially since the money he put in the offshore accounts was put there to avoid paying taxes...he would only have to pay taxes on that money if he brought it back into the US...and he hasn't....Romney knows what those tax returns will tell and that is why he is not sharing....what people need to decide is do they want a country lead my their government that is and has been helping the American people in these hard times, or do they want their country run by the corporations...(Romney's way)...and then the American people will not have the human rights that they deserve...they will have to live by the Romney Rights..his way....lets face it..President Obama..has not been respected as he should of been as far as the Boehner and his followers go....and that is a true shame...Boehner and his followers would rather the American People hurt, then live the lives that they deserve..with Respect...Romeny needs to fess up and stand up like a man...and prove that his tax returns have nothing to hide....must they do...

Romney is a cultist who worships money and sees taxes as a "game" that rich people should evade. Amazing that anyone who works for a living would support a draft-dodging money manipulator who delights in looting corporations and bakrupting them. The hate for Obama is fueled by fear that non-whites are gaining power. Racism? You bet!

But let's just keep pretending he was the poor black child from the ghetto and cry racism. It's more fun that way!

Also funny that a person who tells others to check the facts, uses a site whose facts are not checked.

If Wikipedia (a Wiki Site) isn't allowed in research or fact finding documents as a source, why would it be relavent to your agrument.

The site isn't fact checked, so to use the agrument to check the facts and use that site is laughable.

I think it is really funny that some people are worried what Obama "is doing with money" or what Romney "is going to do with money". Before really understanding that our government doesn't give power to just one person on the Federal Level.

Obama isn't the only person at fault for the money that the government has spent, talk to you Congress and Senate as well. The money has been spent by budgets that were approved by all of those elected officals. So do not blame only Obama.

Also remember what the moneys that have been spent, a good amount was already promised by the Bush Administration before they left office. So it's not all Obama people. Just like if Romney gets into office it will not just be him making decisions.

Learn some how our Government Works people. If you truly did you would understand that a change in president doens't truly do any drastic change at all to policy.

I find it stuningly simple minded that supporters of Barry Soto (aka Barack Obama), a man backed by George Soros and a man with more sealed (hidden in their terms) records and information than anyone in memory are so fast to attack Romney about his financial success and his unwillingness to release more of his past tax returns. Go figure.

Once you take jealousy and greed out of the equation, the IRS has seen nothing wrong with his returns. Everyone knows he is rich and that he pays 15% on capital gains, which is the current rate. Any other disclosure is only for Obama people to look fir some nugget to try to hurt him with. Negative politics. Why does no one just ask Obama why he is not running on his record instead of against Romney's tax return. He is rich, end of story.

Second, it's not a left/right issue. I believe all candidates running for president (shocking there is more than 2) should submit the same paperwork. If tax returns for the last 10 years are expected all candidates should have to do it.

Is Romney rich? sure. Does that make a bad person? no that fact in itself. Do I think you don't become a major party candidate without some serious dirt? Definitely.

Gov. Romney's money has earned money in a blind trust for many years. That is the reason he pays a lower tax rate than those of us who also work for wages. He has not had another job (openly) for the many years which he has spent running for public offices. Just how has he "earned" his millions over those years? Not by working as we know it. And when he chose to run for President, what did he expect would be asked of him about his tax returns. Good heavens, Sen McCain got 23 years of them just to consider Gov. Romney as VP in 2008. Don't the voters in 2012 deserve the same courtesy? By the way, President Obama should be given the respect of his title and not demeaned.

During the student loan legislation discussion, President Obama shared that he and Michelle Obama finally paid off their student loans shortly before he was elected President. Most students who attend law school, med school, etc have large debts to pay after graduation. The lucky few from wealthy families avoid that cost.

Obama paid for his school through Loans, Scholarships, Grants, student jobs and from help from his grandparents ... Sound like how I paid (well almost paid off the loans) for my education. He then worked as a community organizer, got elected to the Illinois government representing that community, and moved on to the federal government. Not a big mystery. His money came from the sale of books only recently, otherwise he was working for everything he had, just like any of us. He is truly the representation of the American Dream. A single mother, worked his way through life given nothing...

I love how people on the right are complaining about the people on the left, when they were making the same complaints about Kerry's tax returns in 2004. The more things change for the major parties the more they stay the same.

Just like in 2004 Obama has a great conspiracy against him, just like Bush did. Both conspiracies are just as farfetched. The same percentage of people who believe in the Obama conspiracy strangely enough believe that 9/11 was done by the government (statistical fact). Just like the Bush conspiracy theories (not facts) it's all based on misaligning information. The Bush, Obama, and 9/11 conspiracies just show how easily lead the sheep of this country can be to the media.

By the way no major media outlet has a "No Spin Zone". By corporate documents and Murdocks own words Fox News only presents about 1 1/2 hours of actual news. CNBC's documents show the same amount for them as well.

I'm sure there will be another major media investigation. If we are following the same play book we will be asking about Romney's wife's fortune. And Obama will be part of some secret organization.

Instead of following that garbage do your own research. Look where candidates are getting money for their campaign. Actually listen to all the candidates that are up for the office, not just the 2 that have the media backing.

As Rick Scott has found out, running a business does not by itself give one the qualifications to govern. And, frankly, the Bain business run by Gov. Romney was only intended to provide returns for investors, not create jobs or contribute to healthy communities.. In many instances jobs were lost at companies bought by Bain and investors including Gov Romney still made millions. Government has an entirely different purpose than businesses have. And running Government as poorly as most businesses are run would create even more problems. What we need are more people who understand how to govern, not more people who understand how to run a business, be a lawyer or raise money from lobbyists or secret donors.

Romney is in a straitjacket of his own making because he’s obsessed with secrecy about Money. But the most important debts can’t be paid with money! Romney's most significant debt which he has refused to pay is that as a presidential candidate he OWES the American people an explanation. He owes respect to his father's established tradition of releasing his tax records. But the fact that he is so secretive and paranoid about making plain his tax returns, which he says, if revealed would only prove he has nothing to hide is Nixonian & Nuts! Americans don't care if he is rich and applaud his success. But Americans also expect candor and straightforwardness not concealment & secrecy. Obama has not placed him in a straitjacket, he's done that to himself all by himself. Even members of his own staff have disagreed. This isn't about money but rather about openness and trust. Romney has a choice to trust in the judgment of the American voter about his financial dealings, but he doesn't think we can handle the truth. Which leads to the next question - What could he possibly be hiding? Obama's not hurting Romney. Romney's hurting himself, and not because he's rich, but because he's secretive and doesn't trust the very people he wants to govern. So what's he hiding? Even conservative Republicans have recommended more disclosure

It is his nature to not share personal information. Unfortunately for him he has stepped into a world where his private life is no longer private.

Of course its fair game, I have not seen any ads of him as Governor so he is not running on that record...after all why should he? He had one of the worst unemployment rates in the country at that time and he passed a health care mandate that uses federal funding to exist. Certainly cannot bring that up during a "no government healthcare" election that is also riding on the economic issues of the day.

So what is he left with? Saving the country via his business experience. Ok then, lets measure that! Lets see if you can help reduce the debt which takes taxes and creating jobs at home. Have you done either Mittens? I doubt it.

There is a beautiful thing called the Freedom of Information Act.

It is hit and miss, but you only know the misses. I guess you only want the misses. And like any technology sometimes you have to take a loss on the initial production.

The Solar Power plants that are powering entire cities as testing, not important I'm sure. Already being used to supply surrounding areas in the state of Florida... OOOH hang on, did I state of Florida, why yes I did.

And the Volt which was orginally a $250,000 in R&D model, but it only costs $40,000 per vehicle to manufacture (fact). That is before any government assistance. I have no problem with the battery assembly being manufactured in Korea, and I know Romney would agree to that as well.

One thing that makes business sense is to send some basic manufacturing jobs over to other countries, we are a service based economy here in the United States.
