Caladesi Publix Project Progressing Rapidly

A photographic timeline of the construction shows how much work has been done in six months.

The Caladesi Publix is on schedule to reopen in fall 2012.

The new Publix being built in the Caladesi Shopping Center is about halfway through construction, and according to business owners in the plaza, the project is progressing according to schedule.

"So far, everything is going as well as can be expected," said Ray Hendricks, owner of the GNC directly adjacent to the new building. "An official from Publix just stopped by to check on us, and he said everything is going according to schedule. So that was good to hear."

The project began in December, when the existing 34,000-square-foot store was closed to make way for a new facility with an additional 12,000 square feet.

Despite the inconvenience of having their parking lot torn apart and dealing with the loss of revenue that comes with such a massive project, merchants have nothing but good things to say about the construction crews and Publix officials.

"The construction people are awesome. They have been terrific to work with," Great Clips owner Laura Lutz said. "It says a lot about them and Publix as a corporation that they care so much about us."

I live on Ward Island and always pass the in-progress building of Publix. The only thing that concerns me, as well as some with whom I've spoken, is that the old store was more like a "neighborhood" grocery, and we're wondering if now it will take over an hour to get from one end of the store to the other! We have two other Publix stores within 4 miles.Additionally, China King was "pushed out" of the Caladesi shopping center, so I hear. That's a shame because it was the only decent Chinese take-out restaurant around. I asked if the original personnel would return, and I was told that they don't know. That's bad PR, as far as I'm concerned.

I totally agree with you Joan. It was the only Publix I shopped in because of its small size and the friendly employees.
Have you heard if China King has moved? They were my favorite!

I'm lovin' it! I live 1.2 miles away and if they have everything I need, it will become my go-to grocer! There have been times when I had to run to Curlew & 19 as they had certain items I couldn't get.

I believe the employees are who make it the "neighborhood" grocery. I hope those who were temporarily relocated to other stores are given first choice to come back! PUBLIX, did you hear me? I'm probably going to check out the other merchants in the Center as well!
