The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will be holding a sobriety checkpoint this weekend on Tampa Road, which is one of north Pinellas county's busiest roads. The monthly checkpoints are held in an effort to reduce DUI-related injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Here's what you need to know about the checkpoint-

  • Where: 3655 Tampa Road, Oldsmar (at Lockheed Martin)
  • When: 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 to 3 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29

Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputies with the Patrol, K-9, Community Policing and Narcotics units will be on the lookout for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Mobile Command Bus will be used for breath testing and the processing of arrested individuals. Deputies and officers will also be checking for driver license, registration, insurance, and equipment violations.

Members of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Traffic Crash Investigations Unit, the Sheriff's Citizen Patrol and Explorer Post 900 will assist with non-enforcement related tasks.

This Friday's checkpoint is dedicated to Virginia Cantlon, who was involved in a crash due to the actions of an impaired driver on November 6th 2006. Cantlon died on Nov. 28, 2006 as the result of injuries sustained during the crash, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office which investigated the accident.

It seems that announcing these checkpoints might be counter-productive, as it alerts drivers where to avoid.

Announcing them is required to get around the inconvient US Constitution which prohibits searches without probable cause. Obama considers the Constitution an outdated racist document, maybe he can get rid of it by an EPA rule.

Why not offer free breathalizers outside of bars as a public service? This would identify impaired drivers, save lives and reduce the strain on our legal system.

The "strain" is worth thousands of dollars to cops, attorneys, court personnel, judges, rehab centers, etc, etc. Your idea would deepen the recession!

Good. I live across the street from Lockheed Martin and this should be very entertaining, I'm going to go out and watch from across the street.

I suppose we all want to live in a zero tolerance community. Any single person of average build and weight should only have one beer to make themselves a felon. I think we'd all be safer.

More business for the local Dunking Donuts, that many cops in one place should be good for a gross of glazed. And of course the criminals are on notice where the cops are, lock up the rest of the town.
