Residents Dissolve Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch
Leaders dissolved the Dunedin neighborhood group last week, citing an overwhelming feeling of a lack of support from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
An emotional interaction between residents and a Pinellas County Sheriff's sergeant was the last straw for frustrated leaders of the Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch group last Wednesday.
Lyndhurst Street residents say they were merely reporting suspicious activity on their Dunedin street on Nov. 28, like Sheriff Bob Gualtieri encouraged them to do 15 days earlier during a Nov. 13 Southside Town Hall meeting at the Hale Senior Activity Center.
Gualtieri told residents to keep calling, but that it takes time and lots of undercover work to infiltrate an underground drug operation.
Deputies arrived on the scene Nov. 28 and searched persons in the driveway at a residence, ultimately releasing the individuals, said ex-Lyndhurst Neighborhood Watch leaders Stacy Rush, a former policewoman, and Donald DeVore, her fiance.
That's when a Pinellas County Sheriff sergeant came to the scene.
As soon as the responding deputies left the scene, the sergeant allegedly yelled at Rush, whom he assumed called in the tip, she said.
The sergeant, whose name was not known to residents, allegedly "got into their faces," told them to "stop calling" the Sheriff's Office, and "you don't know what you're seeing," Rush and DeVore, who both supported Scott Swope, Gualtieri's 2012 election opponent, told Dunedin Patch on Friday.
Stay connected to your community and get top headlines delivered to your inbox by signing up for the free Dunedin patch email newsletter.
That incident, compounded by several others in which Rush alleges being harassed, was the last straw. Rush, DeVore and two other residents pointed to neighborhood incidents involving a pizza delivery prank, a Nov. 18 verbal altercation that nearly erupted in a neighborhood brawl, a fist fight in the middle of Milwaukee Street with authorities one block away, and a suspicious after-dark delivery from an ice cream truck — all with no arrests — as evidence authorities are not taking their concerns seriously.
The 10 key members of the Lyndhurst Neighborhood Watch, at only about three months old, agreed that it would disband the 70- to 80-member group immediately after the Wednesday incident, despite a meeting scheduled for Dec. 5.
An email announcement was sent Nov. 28 at 7:09 p.m.:
This letter is to inform all those interested the South Side Neighborhood Watch has been dissolved. We have been left with little to no support from Sheriff Dept since the last meeting. We have been made to feel like the criminals by law enforcement. Sorry, but we are not safe trying to help the South Side of Dunedin be drug and crime. We have been given excuses and no action. We have been told not to call SO by Sheriff Dept. We are not seeing drug deals go down or other crime. We do not know what we are seeing. Good luck to those living on the South side.
The key members of committee all agreed to end this Watch.
There will be no Meeting on December 5, 2012.
"We no longer trust the Sheriff's Office for protection," Rush said from her front porch just two days after the announcement.
Rush said the group had one meeting and recently declined a free Pinellas County Sheriff's class that teaches residents how to observe and report suspicious persons and potential criminal activity.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office held the annual National Night Out on a plot of land across from Rush and DeVore's duplex in early August.

The SO is not saying not to call them they are saying not to call them with false information! The incident in the where a 'drug deal" was going down in a drive way was a mother and father picking up their sons jacket! And the night that the helicopter came someone called and said that a young man was seen prowling around houses. The young man was inside the house and had been there for over 6hrs. We just can't accuse someone of doing something with out evidence. The SO is tried of getting calls that do not prove to be what is seen. If we are going to have a crime watch lets do it the right way. Just because you may not like someone does not give yoou the right to call the SO and give false information to try to get them arrested. IF we are responsible for what we do the SO will be more willing to assist. I am not stating that we do not have issue because we do, but we can not be out here calling people "crackwhores" and not expect to be hit in the face. IF you see a TRUE problem call the police and let them do their job. Don't confront the person remember you are an ex-officer and we are crime watchers not the police.

Justina, get your facts right the night of the helicopter that issue was several streets south of Lyndhurst, Crime watch did not call that in it was called in by the resident whos home was being broken into, the helicopter was searching and witht their heat camera saw the young man in question which led the police to the door of that young man. He should have stayed in the house if he wasnt doing anything like the rest of us. As for having our facts straight watch out because facts will be very clear going forward. Dealers be warned WE WILL NOT PUT UP WITH THIS ANYLONGER. Just because crimewatch is gone doesnt mean we are not watching. So TAKE YOUR DRUG DEALING SOMEWHERE ELSE. WE SEE WHAT YOU DO EVERYTIME AND SO WILL THE LAW. BE AWARE WE ARE WATCHING VERY CAREFULLY.

Justina,
You should be honest here and let everyone know you are part of the problem not the solution, you hang out with two of the biggest issues we have. You should be warned take it somewhere else or maybe just STOP for your own good. Using drugs ends in two ways DEATH or JAIL you need to make a choice which will it be.

What should be dissolved is the pinnellas county sherrif they r the poorest excuser for cops i have ever seen. When it involves real police work they want nothing to do with it. They just want to sit there lazy buts in dunedin plumbing or the bowling alley and eat doughnuts and give out tickets to innocent people of south dunedin. In 1 day i got pulled over twice once for no tag light (which was false) and once for a front light not working correctly in the daytime! They r scared to go after the drug dealers that is real police work that a bunch of overwieght cops cant do!

I have been a long time resident of Dunedin. I own my own home and work to LEGAL jobs No one more than me wants the best for our neighborhood but the way it is being handled is not the best way. If someone is offering their support but their ideas are different than yours does not make them part of the problem. Take the time to educate yourselves and don't just jump on the bandwagon. The program FAILED because it was not handled the right way again you must take responsibility for your own mistakes. Good Luck.

What kind of example does this send to the children of our community? How can they ever feel safe and secure? It's bad enough dealing with all the pedophiles, and now major role models are not doing their jobs backing up these children's parents when their neighborhoods are being threatened. Instead, the citizens are being yelled at and totally disrespected. How disingenuous to feign concern.

Well I don't think its just Lyndhurst its all of Pinellas County esp. mid to North county. I have yet to meet a cop worthwhile speaking to. The couple of experiences I have had were horrible I never was spoken to in such a demeaning manner and I called them for a neighborhood issue. i think they are the worse ever. I will never call the SO Office for ANYTYHING ever. I truly believe if I ever got robbed they would blame me! I don't look to them for any help and I do believe that Sargent yelled at those individuals because they..feel that they have a badge they can do whatever they want right or wrong. I feel bad that a commujnity tried to make where they live a better place and received no assistance and basically were told they were wrong!
Don't get me started........................but I feel the criminals do "get away with whatever they want" and innocent public gets insulted and demeaned.....

Really after the ones who were in charge were told to STOP calling and that they do not see what is going on Really after you tell them they will go to jail. Funny no one will work with you now.
Then a rep. from the city comes down here and ask's us to work with the SO,,, Hello the residents were working with the SO its the SO who didnt want to work with us the residents. People we are on to something big here bigger then we know. The Narcotic's unit isnt the only one who is tarnished in the Pinellas County SO. Believe me this will all come to and end at some point, as Concerned pointed out either by Jail or Death. I am sure that they beat themselves everyday about everything that they have done wrong. SO lets all throw rocks at them as we leave to go to church tomorrow. What is your excuse for the comments you have made against them and the SO maybe it was the comments that were made to you from your parents when you were young. Try being kind that can change how someone thinks about themselves. We all know jail doesn't work they go in and then come right back out. Then this gives them a record where they can't find work and so they are back to the same old things or finally when they do get a job people call and complain to their job that they have felonies and should not work there. WHAT? WHO DOES THAT? When you keep getting the same results its time to try something new.

wow...lots of drama here. as in any situation, there is good and bad. good neighbors, bad neighbors, good cops, bad cops, etc. rather than be discouraged by bad cops, take it to a higher authority and demand answers....the neighborhood watch should attend city meetings as a united group and confront city officials, ask for a special meeting with Bob Gualtieri and city officials in attendance. get out your camcorders, iphones, etc and film these drug deals.the squeaky wheel gets oiled. it is true that it takes months of investigating to gather evidence to make arrests that will stick, but the real problem is that they use the 2 bit dealers to get to the big fish and the small timers are left to continue to do business as usual, and the jails are so overcrowded that these dealer are released to house arrest or probation and continue to deal while serving their time. the criminal justice system is a money making racket within itself people, so what did you expect. personally, I am appalled that after all the dirty business exposure the SO has had under Gualtieri, the voters re elected him.....shows how out of touch with reality the average citizen is.....sad state of affairs it is.

We are one neighborhood, we do stand together in that we want the "little guys" out of our neighborhood. Some of these neighbors have been here a long time and to them this is normal. To some of them these are their kids and they feel like their kids are being "picked on" for whatever reason they do or do not realize their kids are now young adults who are the problem. Hello mom your kids have been in and out of jail some of them in and out of state prison. They will go back because they have not learned their lesson, and if you continue to allow these things to happen on your property in your "shed" or on your drive way's. They will go back sooner. WE THE NEIGHBORS are tired of this crap. They are not teen's anymore they are in their 20's now its time for them to grow up and these "deal's " to stop. Mom's believe me when I say WE are not afraid of you or your boys, WE THE NEIGBORS are tired of their crap. So either they move or WE will continue to call the SO and your children will continue to get stopped when they are doing things that are not good.
