Letter to the Editor: Ex-Fire Marshal Considers Mayoral Run

"I commend any citizen who wishes to run for a city or governmental office. My advice is to make sure the motives and intentions are correct," writes Dunedin businessman Bill Coleman.

Dear Editor,

Well folks, how does Mayor Bill McElligot sound?

Recently terminated from his job as Dunedin fire marshal, Bill McElligot is considering running for mayor. Bill is testing the waters as to what other Dunedin residents think about his new endeavor.

I don’t know if we really get the true story behind government moves like this (Bill’s termination). It really didn’t come out of the blue. Tell-tale signs were apparent. Did Bill have to give a written accountability of his hour-by-hour work day to City Manager Rob DiSpirito, for the last few months?

Bill McElligot is used to working under stressful conditions; but when it becomes personal, thinking can temporarily be clouded.

I commend any citizen who wishes to run for a city or governmental office. My advice is to make sure the motives and intentions are correct. The love for Dunedin  must be the paramount factor. If seeking office just for revenge or I’ll-show-you-who-you’re-dealing-with attitude, don’t do it. McElligot has done much to protect and serve our city. It’s a difficult position to be in. When public safety and money collide, toes get stepped on and reactions come hard and fast.

Public service is just that, a desire to serve. Bill as been serving the public for decades, he knows how government works. Just give it some time for reflection, don’t jump in just because you're hurt or feeling mistreated. If you feel you have positive ideas and can be an asset to Dunedin, I say, go for it! If you want to get back at city officials and see this as a method to do so, I say, stay out.  Time will tell, so cool off and think deeply. It’s important to all of us. Who live and work in this town.

Sincerely,

Bill Coleman

un-delightful in Dunedin

Dear Editor, I have known Bill for a long time and know that his motives are most assuredly for the benefit of Dunedin. Anyone who thinks otherwise does not know the man well enough to say so. Is Bill angry and disappointed? of course he is, but don't doubt that it is his devotion to public service that drives him. To publicly question the motives of a professional who has given over and above service to this community without knowing the facts seems inappropriate at best. One might question Mr. Coleman's motives.

Everything happens for a reason. People are not terminated without cause, regardless if the reasons were made publically known or not. There are skeletons in Fire Marshal Bill's closet that will surely be made public if he runs for Mayor of Dunedin.

Letters to the editor are an opinion and a blessing to our press. However, what we must remember is that they are the opinion of the writer.

I do not know Fire Marshall McElligot - have never met the man - not sure I have ever even seen him. However, if he meets all the requirements for running for an elected office, and he desires to do so, then he should.

If, as the above, un-named, contributors say this person has skeletons, or whatever, they will come out in the glaring light of day. The other candidates in the race and the press will look for them in every nook and cranny and throw them out for all of us to see, It is the nature of how elections are run. It happens every day.
Let him worry about that and simply campaign and vote for the candidate you feel would be most well suited for the office they are running for.
There is PLENTY of time for mud-slinging when all the candidates have officially thrown their hats in the ring and campaigning begins in ernest.

Perhaps it would have been better if Mr. Coleman had written a personal note to Mr. McElligot instead of a public letter with his concerns? It would have had much more class and led to less wondering about Mr. Coleman’s motives. In regards to Concerned Pinellas County resident, if you don’t think favoritism is alive and well, have a conversation with a local employment lawyer, managers start documenting at the very end to cover their future actions. Everything may happen for a reason, but maybe not the right reason.

Mr. McElligot is one of the most valuable city ambassadors that Dunedin has. It is a loss to Dunedin, and shame to see him go.

Shame on you Bill Coleman for engaging in character assassination by innuendo. Bill McElligot served this city well and faithfully for six years as the best Fire Marshall we've ever had!

Bill McElligot need to take the clue and move on. He is not a good fit for Dunedin and would certainly not win ANY votes from the causeway residents!

I couldn't disagree with John and Bob more. Fire Marshall Bill is egotistical and has no idea how to speak to people. Saw it first hand. Grew up in this City and he is not what I see as the mayor type.
