Man Dies From Crash Injuries

Jeffrey A. Spink, 57, of Dunedin was turning across several lanes of traffic when he was struck on the driver's side door.

 

A Dunedin man is dead after a crash on State Road 580 Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9).

Jeffrey A. Spink, 57, of Dunedin was leaving his job at Lowe’s, using a side road near U.S. 19, investigators report. Spink attempted to exit the side road and was turning left (west toward Dunedin) onto State Road 580 across several lanes of traffic, when an eastbound 2001 Jeep Cherokee using the center lane struck his 2001 Pontiac Firebird was struck in the driver’s door at 12:45 p.m., investigators report.

Spink was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The driver of the Jeep, Jessica L. Feihl, 18, of Safety Harbor had no reported injuries.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash were rainy.

The eastbound lane of State Road 580 was closed for about three hours for the Major Accident Investigation Team. It reopened at about 4 p.m., deputies report.

No one has yet been charged, deputies report.

The investigation is ongoing.

Such a dangerous entry/exit - I can't imagine why they still allow left turns off of either the K-Mart/Lowe's parking lot or Enterprise.

I'm with Mathew..... it's TOO close to the US19 intersection with enough commotion as it is there. Time to place those upright thingies there to block, if not discourage turns. Sorry to hear of Mr. Spink's loss of life - it could have been any of us - I've turned there myself.
