Rename Iris's and Win $200

New owners who have taken over Iris's Grill recently are gutting the restaurant and starting from scratch. Help them rename the dining establishment for a shot at $200.

Iris's Grill has a new owner and will soon have a new name.

New owner Cindy Phillips is in the process of transforming Iris's Grill — right down to its name.

The Douglas Avenue eatery has been closed for the past two to three weeks as she takes over ownership responsibilities.

Last week, crews were seen power-washing the outside of the restaurant. Its former moniker is stripped from the awning above the door.

Phillips told Dunedin Patch she's also been hard at work cleaning and refurbishing the inside and is not yet sure when the new, yet-named restaurant will open. She's still got lots of work to do, she said.

A message was placed above the eatery's roadside, trademark cartoon waitress sign late last week, asking residents to help rename the restaurant for a cash award.

"Name This Place $200 Reward," it reads.

No other details were posted at the time.

Editor's Note (Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, 1 p.m.): Name suggestions should be submitted in person at Iris's Grill, 234 Douglas Ave.

"Cecil's Stadium Cafe"...Cecil Englebert brought baseball to Dunedin and it would give the opportunity to have a memorabilia section. The city, Chamber, Historical Society has many images.

Because of the proximity to the ballpark, I love all the baseball names. I can only imagine the promos. Definitely strengthening the Dunedin community bond A diner with subtle baseball theme. No brainer.

The ballpark connection is certainly a good thing to spin off of with a name and with the decor. Hopefully, the cuisine will not mimic the ballpark food! I like the Dunedin Dugout, Ball Park Cafe and do like the Blue Jay Cafe (but that might get into some trademark issues). OR how about 'Home Run' or "My Pitchin' Cafe" :)

A lot of Canadiens live in the area permanently and snow birds who love their Blue Jays. With that said add some Blue Jays to your front signs and call it Blue Jay Cafe!

Hey gang, there's been lots of questions ... so here's what I know so far: If you want to make your entry official be sure to swing by Iris's and submit it. Folks have been sitting outside the restaurant with a big bowl for folks to drop their entries into. I am not sure how long the contest is open — but these ideas are rockin'!
