San Christopher Dollar General Plans Move Along
Dollar General developers updated site plans that replace a privately-owned "eyesore" storage lot. The item is up for discussion at tonight's city commission meeting.
Updated plans for a Dollar General Store to replace an "eyesore" storage lot are expected to get a green light at Thursday's commission meeting.
Developers recently changed the plans based on resident concerns for noise, traffic and stormwater flooding in a Dec. 6 public hearing.
The latest plans have already received staff approval and await the final OK from city officials at Thursday's second public hearing.
Land use and rezoning changes that allow for an incoming discount retail chain at 1326 San Christopher Drive met resistance in November in December from both residents and a citizen advisory board that focuses on Dunedin development.
Commissioners said they had no legal reason to deny the Dollar General plans.
Developers said they would address the resident concerns by adding a concrete fence as a noise buffer to the adjoining neighborhood and a stormwater runoff pond.
The property currently does not have any stormwater treatment because its purchase pre-dates regulations that made it mandatory to have them.
Property owner Ron Retterer has used the property as a storage lot for large RVs, 18-wheelers, boats and other vehicles for the past 20 to 30 years. The property has also been a constant sources of code violations over the years, according to city officials.
The stores carry school supplies, beach items, toys, toiletries, dog and cat food, clothing, accessories, food items and seasonal decorations at prices between $1 and $10.
The national retail chain is looking to expand by 600 to 800 stores in Florida over the next year.
The public can attend Thursday's meeting at Dunedin City Hall or watch the meeting live beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Dunedin TV on Channel 615 for Bright House customers or Channel 15 for Knology and Verizon customers.

Uh, some of us like a discount. And Dunedin certainly is no ghetto. Sounds like you should move to Belleair.

Actually we already have a Dollar Tree, a Family Dollar, and a Walmart...Dunedin has a reputation of small town flair with lots of local business's and specialty stores. I personally think that three discount stores in a town as small as Dunedin is plenty...Dunedin has actually gotten more "ghetto" for lack of a better term over the last few years.

If the city would like another dollar store maybe they should put it in the downtown Dunedin Main Street area...but that would NEVER happen, as that is the only area that concerns city officials.
