Specialty Olive Oil Shop Comes to Dunedin
The St. Pete-based Kalamazoo Olive Company recently opened its newest location in the Independence Square Plaza.
Kalamazoo Olive Company, a gourmet grocery store that specializes in premium olive oils and vinegars, recently opened a shop on County Road 1 in Dunedin.
“Olive oil is a $700 billion a year business,” owner James Ryan said. “But this is the only place around where people can get fresh, pressed oils.”
Ryan's store is the second location for the St. Petersburg-based company, which originally opened in 2010 on Central Avenue. He imports olive oils from all over the world, including Italy, Chile, Argentina and Venezuela.
Ryan claims his oils and vinegars are better for you because they are “unadultered," or free from additives, flavorings and secondary oils found in most store bought brands, which can sit on shelves for up to two years before they are sold.
"You wouldn't drink orange juice that's been on the shelf for two years, would you?" Ryan asks.
He says his products typically make it from “tree to table” in a couple months, and every oil is meticulously tracked from its origin all the way to the shop to ensure they have not been tampered.
In addition to oils and vinegars, Kalamazoo sells imported pastas, bruschetta, dips, snacks and items such as cutting boards and serving dishes.
Ryan, who firmly supports local businesses and also sells products from area companies, plans on having a couple private opening events in the next few weeks before hosting a public grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 25.
During the grand opening there will be food demos from Chef John Lewis, complimentary Bloody Marys in the morning and free gifts with every purchase.

Good luck to Mr. Ryan. Don't know if you've done a story on Dunedin's other Olive Oil shop, Jeffery. Middle Earth Olive Oil Co. is now open on Broadway across from Stirling Plaza.

Please count me in for the opening! I only use olive oils since they are so much better for you than other vegetable/hydrogenated oils. Can't wait to check out this new merchant.

Working in the food service industry I have seen dozens of these stores. A couple of corrections; Mr Ryan doesn't import the oils, he sources them from a huge distributor in Oakland, CA (Veronica Foods) as stated on the bottle. Also, you state that the oil is meticulously tracked from its origin. Other than the country of origin, I don't believe Mr Ryan could tell you exactly where any of the oils are produced, (i.e. town, estate, grower, etc.), as Veronica Foods refuses to share that information...why? I don't understand. They seem to be good products but why won't they state where, exactly, they are grown/produced. When spending $15-$20 for a specialty product, the consumer should have access to such basic information.

It's so important to know the real truth behind a product. The article made it sound like Mr. Ryan has an olive press in the back of the store. I think we're all aware that some companies that market EVOO do so when the product isn't really olive oil at all. That's why what B Beatrice says is important.
