Too Many Discount Stores? Here's What Dunedin's Saying
As Dunedin city leaders weigh in on updated site plans to a Dollar General Store on San Christopher Drive, here's what Dunedin readers have to say.
Since we told you in December about potential land use and zoning changes that would allow for an incoming discount retail chain, Patch readers have had plenty to say on the topic.
Our lastest story on the topic, Dollar General One Step Closer to San Christopher, received lots of discussion. Here's what some Dunedin Patch readers had to say:
Hannah Andrews: "Good enough. The lot will be functional now."
Karen Burton: "Corporate America wins again. Profit is the bottom line and not people. I thought Dunedin was supposed to be "green" as they constantly brag. Goods made in China and other countries under near slave labor conditions are "green"? Our "Delightful Dunedin" is now the new poster child of Wal-Mart and Dollar stores. Thought the city had more vision than this-obviously not. Don't know why the flooding problem along San Christopher wasen't addressed beforehand. Another storm like "Sandy" and that's all she wrote. I rather live near a junkyard than have a company that bullies it's way in and citizens have no recourse. Dunedin is being sold out to the highest bidder. Wake up!"
Cecilia: "Dunedin FL, Home of multiple "Dollar" Stores all located within walking distance of one another and one right smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. Putting this store in this neighborhood is just wrong on so many levels. What next, Pawn shops and check cashing stores? I ,for one, will be so proud when my friends from out of town visit and as they turn off CR1onto San Christopher, I can say oh yes. just drive past the Dollar General store, my street is the second past it on the right. Oh yes, it is a proud moment indeed for our neighborhood.{said with dripping sarcasm, lest anyone think I am happy about this} Welcome to Discount Dunedin! A cheap place to shop and live."
Do you agree? Does Dunedin have too many discount retail stores? Share your thoughts in the comments section below to continue the conversation.

Another Dollar store is absolutely ridiculous! They're in each other's backyards! Dunedin is better than this,...wake up!

Wrong location, wrong message, bad precedent being set. This is a lateral move for the neighborhood, not an improvement.

This is not the image Dunedin wants to project. All these discount stores cheapen ou town. Pardon the pun.

If the commissioners and Dunedin leaders want this so bad, put it in their neighborhood. Thank you!

This is a terrible idea. I am a huge supporter of LOCAL businesses, we hardly need ANOTHER dollar store in Dunedin. I won't support these businesses. BUY LOCAL, SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW DUNEDIN NEIGHBOR!

Agree with all of the comments above. We all know towns that just look shabby, cheap, headed the wrong way, and just much less than special in any way. We are fortunate to be able to move elsewhere, may start the search after this

Downtown Dunedin is great but why does City Staff and Commisioners want to
allow the rest of the city to be built with duplicate junk stores? (China made junk)
This takes away from local merchants. The architecture of Dollor General is nothing but an eyesore. Commisioners, Please vote NO.

I moved here from another town in Fl, that was just filled with junk stores. Dunedin seemed different, unique, and a place that supported its local merchants. Lets do more to bring in local business's, and not become like every other place on the map, we have so much more than that to offer!

I agree with all the comments AGAINST a Discount Dunedin with national crappy chains selling Chinese merchandise. Try something different and keep the national franchises in other towns. Dunedin can be better than this if you are patient and attract green startup local businesses. Its bad enough that you have the Family Dollarand pawn shops on 580...brings in a wrong element..stand up and protect the decent local businesses by not underselling them.

This is horrible!! This totally takes away from the character of this wonderful town. Next will be pawn shops , and that will also attract the wrong crowds. Take down the dollar stores NOW !!!'

Do a web search on Dollar General and see the effects that their openings have on surrounding neighborhoods. Also see how they come in NOT selling alcohol and tobacco products and about 6 months after they are open and the (negative) hoop-la about their opening has somewhat subsided; they (Dollar General) apply for and receive licenses to sell those products. It just gets better and better.......
