Union Street Munchee's Armed Robbery Suspects At Large
Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives are investigating an armed robbery at the Union Street Munchee's late Tuesday in Dunedin.
Pinellas County detectives are searching for two people suspected of robbing the Union Street Munchee's late Tuesday.
Authorities report that two suspects, at least one of them armed, entered Munchee's at 614 Union St. at about 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15.
They ordered one clerk to lay on the ground at gunpoint and a second clerk to walk behind the counter, demanding money from the cash register.
Both the clerks complied, said Cecilia Barreda, Pinellas County Sheriff's spokeswoman.
She said one of the suspects struck the clerk over the head with a gun and he fell to the ground, sustaining a small cut to the head. The victim was later treated at the scene by Dunedin Fire paramedics.
Barreda said that the suspects exited Munchee's with an undisclosed amount of cash and a carton of cigarettes. As they left, they came across a customer who was just arriving and pointed a gun at him, Barreda said.
The suspects were last seen fleeing on foot.
Barreda said someone called 9-1-1.
Pinellas County Sheriff's Homicide and Robbery detectives responded. A K9 tracking unit picked up a trail, but it did not result in locating the suspects, Barreda said.
Barreda released the following information regarding suspect descriptions:
One suspect is described as a black male, last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with what appeared to be a Hollister logo, dark baggie pants and a black bandanna over his face. He was seen carrying a red backpack.
The second suspect is described as a black male, last seen wearing a black hoodie with long black shorts that had a white vertical stripe, and black and white basketball shoes. He was also seen wearing a dark-colored bandanna over his face.
The investigation is continuing.
Editor's Note: Dunedin Patch updated to include suspect descriptions following a check-in with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at 1:09 p.m.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jeff Capra at 727-582-6200, or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers (a 24-hour tip line) at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).

This is what we have been talking about. Union and Milwaukee is a very dangerous area and needs to be patrolled day and night. Lots of kids live around there and go to school up the road. Lots of armed drug dealers and armed robbers around there. A dangerous mix. We don't want a tragedy to occur. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The people who work at Munchies are good people. I am glad they weren't hurt seriously although what they went through was bad enough.

Unbelievable...Official suspect descriptions have not been released yet! So PCSO wants community involvement...How if they don't get description out there....ONCE AGAIN....THIS AREA NEAR SOUTHSIDE OF DUNEDIN HAS ANOTHER OCCURENCE! Worthless PCSO...

Agree, Lori. Guys could have been caught by now with a little more effort with descriptions and information. Prioritize, PCSO!

My husband and I moved our family out of this area a year after moving on Union . . . a year after two break-ins to our truck, one stolen bike and two boys trying to coax my four year old son to let them "ride" his bike down the street for $1. The landlord was upset but I am sure he understood when he moved the next family in and the house was broken into . .they are no longer their either.

Ladies, PCSO has a long rough road ahead of them but in the last 2 months they have made a significant impact on the South Side. I am not sure where you are but they are out Day and night all hours. These problems did not start over night and will take time to correct. If infact they have not released the desriptions I am certain they have good reason These guys are working hard to clean up the area, maybe instead of bashing them come out and let them know you appreciate what they are doing. Stand proud in your neighborhood and let the "bad guys " know they are no longer welcome in OUR SOUTH SIDE. Hats off to the PCSO for working with us to give us our neighborhood back.

We will be very happy to hear the good reason, and if their reason leads to an arrest. That's all. Cleaning up a neighborhood takes more than just PCSO patrolling though. It would help if people would come out of their houses and simply do things like people used to do in neighborhoods. Seems like it's only the bad guys who "hang out". Good guys could "hang out" too. THAT would make a difference. And before anyone says they're working or too busy - do it when you're not. The "presence" of anyone who can see, witness, and use a phone, deters people from doing bad things.

I can tell you that I have started walking in evenings to get fit. I witnessed SO out and about on South Side. I can tell you they are working. Maggy Mae you are right we need to be out walking and talking to neighbors. Criminals do not like neighbors watching out for each other.. Last night I witnessed at least 3 SO stopping and talking to people in one hour.

Unofficial description from the scene: Two black "kids". At least one had a gun. Lots of kids in this neighborhood and kids talk. Juveniles who are bold enough to carry guns and inflict violence on an adult need to be exposed by PCSO or anyone else. Who will they go after next? Not sharing details does nothing to protect the public.

And according to records there was a call of an armed robbery at Munchies on Bayshore last night. Wonder if we'll learn anything about that? Maybe Katie or another reporter can ask for the information, rather than wait for it.

Unofficial description from Munchies on Bayshore: Around 6' tall, covered so that race couldn't be determined, had a gun. I think it's about P.R., folks. PCSO is worried residents will panic and visitors will cancel their vacations. They need to worry more about the lack of trust and confidence created by their withholding information on neighborhood crimes. If someone's been caught and they don't need the public's help, great. They have a public information officer. Her name is Marianne Pasha.

Robberies are going to happen. Preventing them takes more than extra patrolling. Did the two Munchies have cameras? Were they working? Do owners of stores like these make an effort to present a well-kept store front and parking lot? Those things would detract some, but not all. *Interestingly today, there is a very detailed report of a domestic violence incident from PCSO here. Yet, still nothing on these two robberies which affects a lot more people. These crimes themselves, no offense to the guys behind the registers, are not scary to me. But the continuing covering up of the truth by PCSO with no rational explanation as to why, is.

Yes, and I have written to the Times, and SO about it after the second robbery. No response. Dunedin and SO should be protecting it's citizens. The robberies should be the headlines, not the city planning on a new multi-million dollar complex.

Maggy, Karen, Lori, I absolutely understand your concerns. I am doing my best to keep everyone updated on what's going on in their neighborhoods in Dunedin. In addition to crime, I also cover city government, Dunedin schools, businesses, local events, and everything else in Dunedin, largely by myself. It's a lot, so I appreciate your patience.
I wonder if you might ever consider signing up for the Sheriff's Citizen's Academy. It may answer some of your law enforcement questions and shed light on some of your related concerns. I took the 12-week program in an effort to help my reporting and learned a lot that I didn't even expect. It's free and open to the public, provided you pass a background check.
Here's some more information if it strikes your interest: http://www.pcsoweb.com/operations/programs-and-services/citizens-academy/

I thank you Katie for all your response. You are the only one who has written about these robberies. We really appreciate what you are doing. Can you tell us why this hasn't been covered in the Times or SO?
I would love to go to the Acadamy in the future when time provides.

I can't speak on how the Times or SO prioritizes stories, coverage or news releases. If I had to speculate, the Times and the SO are looking at a wide audience: Pinellas County + Tampa Bay. I can focus on just Dunedin. And judging by the news releases that came from the Sheriff's office this week (http://www.pcsoweb.com/news-releases/) it was a busy crime week in Pinellas County.
I asked the SO PIO about the Munchee's robbery as soon as I heard about it and they responded quickly and told me they did plan to put a news release out on it. I have no insight, however, as to what may have delayed their plans.
I would feel absolutely terrified to hear of an armed robbery in my immediate neighborhood, so I understand you must feel similiar. I will continue checking in with the SO regularly on this case and will keep you updated as soon as I learn something new!

Katie, you are doing a great job! I don't think anyone here sets out to bash PCSO , but unfortunately, when they appear to be withholding information or to have another agenda by doing so, the public, at least those who want to solve problems and not put our head in the sand, lashes out. Same thing happened with the kids on Union who were partying and one was killed, and all the sheriff released was that he was founding "sitting in a chair with a beer in one hand and a joint in the other". How does that send a message or support justice? As a journalist, we know you are committed to the truth, so keep at it, and we will support the Patch in your efforts. And if we have to go out on our own and ask questions, maybe some of us will.

Seems like the Munchees cases never even existed. No mention by Times, City, or SO. The illusion of safety is all that remains. It's amazing nobody was killed. Now criminals know where to go to commit crimes and get away with it. Wish someone could prove me wrong.

PCSO will probably say they don't want people to overreact, which is kinda what your comment is doing, Karen. No offense meant, but I'm sure the sheriff will throw some statistics out to say "crime has decreased" or that we're better than say Tampa or other. The problem is that they don't seem to trust the public with the facts from criminal incidents, which are public record if charges aren't being investigated by the state attorney. Clearwater PD came out with the facts about last night's robbery at a Dodge store on Cleveland on their facebook page. Why all the secrecy with PCSO? Is it some cost-cutting micromanagement from the sheriff that says informing the public is a waste of time? Or like many think, to give an illusion that is not reality.

Hi everyone! I've had a busy week. Just checked in with PCSO. Official suspect descriptions —
One suspect is described as a black male, last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with what appeared to be a Hollister logo, dark baggie pants and a black bandana over his face. He was carrying a red backpack.
The second suspect is described as a black male, last seen wearing a black hoodie with long black shorts that had a single vertical stripe, and black and white basketball shoes. He also wore a dark-colored bandana over his face.
PCSO says this Munchee's location was not robbed a second time.
I am adding this update to the main story. The investigation remains ongoing.

Thank you, Katie. However, there was an apparent robbery at the Munchies on Bayshore, as well as the one on Union. So, while we're glad to hear this Munchies was not robbed a second time, there's still no info on the robbery at the Munchies on Bayshore. Getting this info available to the public in a timely manner is not the responsibility of the Patch or Tampa Bay Times, while it would be nice to find it there. It is the responsibility of PCSO. This is part of where PCSO is failing. Whether putting out this information could have resulted in an arrest, who is to say at this point? But it does tell criminals they have a good lead time to get away with their deeds, according to PCSO's delays in this and other recent cases.

I was told that four other convenience stores have been robbed in the area around the same time. The new 7-11 on Sunset Pt. Rd. in Clearwater and Rainbow store. The other ones I don't know the names of. No mention of it at all anywhere by sheriffs or police.

Karen, can I ask who told you or where did you hear these things? If PCSO would put out the facts, rumor and speculation would not take over. Clearwater PD does a better job on their facebook site of informing the public. Why can't PCSO?

Shouldn't some of you gun toting Obama hating crazies be out keeping our neighborhoods safer. Where's all the gun nuts when you need them? Always complaining never helping. I've had trouble in that neighborhood before and been threatened. When police showed the munches guys lied about what they heard and saw so cops looked at me as the instigator which I wasn't. Thanks for the help guys. Was probably the guy that threatened to kill me and then ran off, that the cops said I shoulda followed, that robbed them. Except he was a older white guy with glasses, long greasy hair and a beer belly. Long story but suffice to say sheriffs didn't help much and neither did the guys at munches who from how it transpired obviously knew the guy that threatened me and lied about it. Karma is a bitch.
