What Should Replace Sweetbay on Main St. in Dunedin?
Will you be sad to see this grocery store close? What do you think should take its place?
A Dunedin Sweetbay Supermarket, at 1681 Main St., is among 33 under performing stores in Florida scheduled to close in Feburary, the grocer's parent company announced Wednesday.
The story sparked a lot of discussion among Patch readers:
- A few commenters (Kathleen Kimpel, PhD, Carey C and KimW) said they wished a Trader Joe's would take Sweetbay's place.
- Kathy Childers noted that "I heard Kroger was coming."
- And others speculated why this Sweetbay wasn't performing well.
Do you shop at this Sweetbay? Will you be sad to see it go? What do you think should replace it? Post a comment below and join the conversation.

Put the new dollar General Store there instead of Pinehurst - know it is not going to happen but one can dream........

Definitely sad to see this Sweet Bay leave, not to mention the loss of jobs. I was in there yesterday and it was like a funeral. Another chain-style grocery store makes no sense, with so many others nearby. I would LOVE to see a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods - some type of specialty market.

I will really miss this store. I get all of my prescriptions there and pick up needed groceries almost daily since I live across the street in Amberlea. I particularly prefer their generic store brands for both quality and price. If they have to go I would prefer to have Kroger take over their location and keep all of the employees of Sweet Bay

I would love to see Kroger lease all of these locations; particularly this one on Main St. in Dunedin

I agree, Whole Foods would be a great new addition to the community! But sad to see SweetBay leaving. They were the only ones to carry a couple of hard to find items, like Crystals Wing Sauce, and Hidden Valley Coleslaw dressing!

I shop at Publix, and I don't think anyone can compete with Publix, but since I live directly across the street, it was very convenient to run in for something quick, but I don't think another supermarket will make it unless it's a specialty store like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.

Sittin' between Walmart (price) and Publix (service) another grocery store would have its work cut out for itself. And Whole Foods is rumored to be coming in up the street at the lower level of Sears at Westfield at Countryside mall.

I am saddened to be losing my favorite grocery with its store brand and Hannaford products. Those who work there have become friends I look forward to greeting & exchanging pleasantries with. I am very sad for them.....I will miss them! As for a replacement, I would like to see Trader Joes, but with so much competition....why would they consider it? With the proposed Whole Foods entering the picture soon how can yet another grocery survive much less thrive! I shall drive the extra distance to the remaining area Sweetbay by Enterprise on Mc Mullen Booth....distance, gasoline and time all worth it!

This is the perfect opportunity to bring a very high end Whole Foods Market or fresh market comparable to what we have in Countryside.

People would flock to Trader Joe's. It's trendy with a huge assortment of items not found at Wall Mart or Publix. I also find the quality and customer service to be excellent.

Sweetbay has an awesome organic section. I would love to see something even more health concscience. Nature's Food Patch would be great but I'd settle for Trader Joe's, Fresh Market or something like that. I don't support Whole Foods, they caved to the GMO food providers. I no longer trust them. That's a topic for another day!

I am a stanch Sweet Bay patron. I have not been in Publix in a year?? more or less. Prices too high and quality is just OK. I always do well at Sweetbay. Sorry to see that store go, it and the employees will be missed. The high end stores you speak of will never come to Dunedin. The demographics do not support it, Clearwater can't even get a Trader Joes due to demographics so.....The empty space will just show how crappy our economy STILL is, even though "THEY" tell us it's getting better.........HA...... more lost jobs and less places to shop which we can afford.does snot help the local economy now does it.....someone just wants the economy to fail its citizens..thanks politicians...hope they have a wonderful becuase they don't have to thinnk about our budgets!!!

Whole Foods is rumored to be coming to Countryside Mall, taking over the bottom half of Sears. If that's true, they won't want the Sweetbay location. It would do well at the mall, just like the one at International Mall. Trader Joe's would fit a unique niche, for sure.

Anyone with a 5th grade education could tell you it would be stupid to put a grocery store where a grocery store just failed.. A small Bass pro shops would kill in that location and would bring more patrons to or city

I'm with Melody for a Trader Joe's in the area. Let's face it Sarasota and Gainesville is a long commute for their goods, and firmly believe TJ would hit on all the buttons for a lot of people who live here that like fresh produce, and organic food items at a good price.

We'd been shopping at Sweetbay for odds and ends from its very beginning. We found their produce presentation excellent, their wine selection outstanding, and their meat excellent albeit pricey. Last year, when the Curlew Publix closed for rehab, we decided to try Sweetbay as our primary supermarket - meaning that we'd be shopping for three weeks of menus. In short, $$$. So, on a Friday afternoon, we loaded two carts and wended our way to the check-out. ONE check-out was open and there were five people ahead of us, each with full carts. There was no packer. When we complained to the checker, she said that the packer was probably busy doing something else. After packing the order for the woman ahead of me and then my own order of nearly $300, we decided that we'd return to Publix and the Granada store until the Curlew store reopened.

For those of you who have prescriptions at this store (like me), those will now be serviced at Palm Harbor store at CR1 and Tampa Road.
I live across Main Street from the Dunedin store and will miss it greatly. Easily bought 95% of my groceries here. Did the big shopping trips and treated it like a convenience store, too. I guess the big trips will go to the Palm Harbor store and they will lose the convenience sprints. Can't help but feel that they got these two store closings backwards. I do retail service work and get assignments in these stores .... Dunedin always seemed busier.

I would love to see an organic food co-op in this location. Having a co-op as an option would ensure that organic, non-GMO food would be available at prices that would allow it to be an AFFORDABLE & viable choice for those on a budget who would still like their families to eat well. The USDA definition of "organic" is not organic as most people define it. The co-op model would benefit the residents of Dunedin. The availability of fresh organic produce would also have an enormous appeal to those who chose Dunedin as a tourist destination! We would be pulling a customer base from both. I would love to see a store along the lines of Nature's Foods in Clearwater. Walmart, Publix and Save A Lot would still be available to those who prefer a more traditional grocery store.
I can only hope that the PEOPLE of Dunedin will be the ones able to help make this decision. Other plans and projects that impact our city have come to be with the okay from just a few. PLEASE let this be a decision made by all of us who care!

Trader Joe's, like all successful retail chains, have specific demographic requirements: "Within a 15–minute driving radius of a potential site, there must be at least 36,000 people with four–year college degrees who have a median age of 44 and earn a combined household income of $64K a year."
I'm sorry, but Dunedin and the surrounding area isn't even close to meeting that criteria.

I will miss all the employees at Sweet Bay. It was my favorite place to shop and will use another Sweet Bay that remained open. I feel for all the employees! Since there are so many children in this area, I would like to see a rolling rink, or a little movie theater put there. It is close enough for families to take their children for a day out. Public's is to expensive for me. Good luck Sweet Bay employees. All of you did an excellent job. Prices were the best in this store. Since Winn Dixie remolded their prices have skyrocketed.

As I mentioned above, Dunedin does not fit the demographic criteria of Trader Joe's: age, income, 4 year degrees, etc. The one in Sarasota is doing great because Trader Joe's knew it would, because Sarasota meets all the demographics they require for a store location.
