Dunedin High Student Builds Shed For Community Garden

Rick Wallace also goes to state Academic Team quiz bowl in April.

Whiz Kid of the Week

  • Name and Age: Rick Wallace, 17, senior
  • School:Dunedin High School
  • Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Rick championed the construction of the new shed at the Dunedin Community Garden Association's plot of land at Eagle Scout Park. He was also one of six students chosen (out of 96 students statewide) to compete for states on the Academic Team at Walt Disney World in April.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Rick took on the Dunedin Community Garden Association shed project to complete requirements for obtaining his full Eagle Scout rank. The project required him to "plan, develop and carry out a project" that proves he exhibited "leadership over people." All manual labor had to be completed by volunteers; he was not allowed to do any of the construction himself. Rick lead and organized the permit and inspection process and oversaw construction of the entire shed. Rick said he may have learned some of his father Richard Wallace's carpentry skills, and added that fundraising was the toughest part of the project. "The biggest thing you learn," Rick said, "is how to work on everyone else's time."

I was at the park a couple of days ago to see if there was any more progress on the community Garden plot. When I saw the shed I thought it was a very professionally build and looked great on the site. I did not look inside but took a few photos while I was there. Thank you so much for using your leadership skills and much thanks to all your volunteers for there hard work on building the shed. I now will appreciate it so much more knowing that it was build here in Dunedin, and not store bought. Glen Carlin

As fundraising chairperson for the Dunedin Community Garden Association, I worked closely with Rick Wallace and he is an amazing young man. Thank you, Rick, for choosing the Dunedin Community Garden for your Eagle Scout Project. How fitting the shed you supervised building is located in Eagle Scout Park!
