Wojciechowski Cages Flying Tigers

Jays take a two-game lead over Tampa.

Backed by a solid six-inning pitching performance from Asher Wojciechowski the D-Jays defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday (Aug. 23) 6-1.

The 22-year-old Citadel alum gave up just a solo homer to Jordan Lennerton, last week's Florida State League player of the week , while striking out five.

This was Wocjiechowski's second consecutive start where he allowed a single run in six-plus innings.

The D-Jays pounded out 12 hits including a home run from catcher A.J. Jimenez, his fourth of the season.

The Jays top of the order — except for Brad Glenn — produced 10 of the 12 hits. Brad McElroy led off with three hits, Jimenez followed with another two, Sean Ochinko had three including two doubles and Brian Van Kirk added a pair of singles around a walk.

On Deck: Dunedin and Lakeland play game No. 2 of the three-game series today (Aug. 24). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Need to Know:

  • The 2009/10 Florida State League Champion Tampa Yankees remain hot on the D-Jays tail. The team won four in a row and trail the Jays by two games after being rained out Tuesday.
  • The Gulf Coast Blue Jays Eric Arce set a league record for home runs on Monday, belting his 14th in the short season. The League plays only a 60-game schedule, making this accomplishment even more impressive. The 5-foot-9-inch Tampa native also leads the Gulf Coast League in walks and is third in on-base percentage.
