Dunedin Reacts to Election of Pope Francis

The white smoke appeared on Wednesday, signalling that the conclave had chosen Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to be the new head of the Catholic Church.

As the bells rang and white smoke appeared Wednesday, Catholics around the world celebrated the election of Pope Francis as the 266th pope.

We asked Dunedin Patch Facebook readers how they felt on Facebook about the Catholic Church's selection of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to lead the church.

They responded positively.

Olivia Paff Hoegstrom wrote, "Amazing. He has the mind of Jesuit, the heart of a Franciscan and was the front-runner, last time. Plus who doesn't love some Argentinean food??"

"I think he's a great choice," wrote David DeRousse.

We want to hear from you! Do you think Pope Francis is the right person to lead the Catholic Church?

On Wednesday, Bishop Robert Lynch with the Diocese of St. Petersburg released a welcome letter to Pope Francis.

As an ex-Catholic I see very little difference in this pope vs the last pope. Both with shady pasts, both think women have no brains and both hate gays openly. This pope is mildly younger. That's about it. You can tip toe around things if you want but organized religion is broken, full of greed, hate and deceit. People love to go on and on about the good religion does but I always think of the old country saying about that little white spot on top of chicken crap...........it's chicken crap too! Had they picked a young open minded pope that was not the same ole white boys club (which this one is) I may have taken a second look. This guys parents moved to S.America from Italy. He is in the club. People seem to be so easily fooled, it amazing! Or should I say It's a miracle.

With our nations' urgent need to overhaul the health care system and each persons' need to deal withRead More increasing health care costs/decreasing quality of care, volunteering for SHINE could be part of the answer. If, like me, you feel frustrated with the FL Legislature which seems to be working against us rather than for us; volunteering with organizations that educate the public in essential areas of concern can be an effective way to create grassroots changes. SHINE offers exceptional training and effectively updates it's volunteers regarding changes in the healthcare system.
