Weaver Park Playground Opens to Barrage of Children

A ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday morning marked the official opening of Dunedin Youth Guild Playground at Weaver Park.

Dunedin Youth Guild Playground at Weaver Park is officially open to the public.

“[We] set out to develop a fun, attractive, accessible park with a nature theme. I think we’ve accomplished exactly that” Vince Gizzi, parks and recreation director, said during a well-attended ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday.

Local campers and camp counselors led the opening ceremony in the Pledge of Allegiance before kids raced to be the first to try the new playground equipment.

The playground’s nature theme is intended to blend in with Weaver Park’s waterfront setting. In addition, Weaver Park has recently gained two new pavilions and a bathroom facility.

Weaver Park’s addition was made possible because of a $200,000 donation from the Nan and Tom Moffatt Charitable Trust.

The Moffatts were once members of the Dunedin Youth Guild and "now their memory can live on,” said Anita Apley, president of Dunedin Youth Guild.

“We wish many years of fantastic play here for the children of Dunedin,” Apley said.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Eggers, several city commissioners and Rob DiSpirito, city manager, were among the attendees at Thursday's ribbon cutting.
