Storm Photos: Flooding in Dunedin, Damage Throughout Region

Beware of flooding in low-lying areas.

caused a fire that destroyed one home and as many as 400 residents lost power as a storm walloped Dunedin on March 31.

Progress Energy reported the outages restored by the afternoon. No one was injured when lightning struck a house on Weybridge Lane, but the resulting fire was rendered unsafe for living. The occupants of the house and their two dogs declined Red Cross assistance.

The storm, which caused tornadoes to areas inland from Dunedin's coastal nook, kept the region on high alert as soon as it began during the twilight hours. Dunedin's streets were littered with down palm fronds, brush and blown-over trash cans during a brief lull around 1 p.m.

Significant flooding was found in low-lying areas, including sections of , the pond behind the pavilion at and throughout streets.

Dunedin High School's was been canceled. Coaches expect to resume tomorrow, Friday, April 1, at the Englebert Complex.

No major damages have yet been reported, however nearby towns have had sigficant weather-related incidents:

CLEARWATER

No one was hurt when a hangar at the St. Pete/Clearwater International Airport collapsed and crushed two vehicles and one plane. Four other planes were overturned from the powerful winds.

The airport is at a standstill as Progress Energy works to restore power.

"Progress Energy assured us that we're their number one priority," Thomas Jewsbury, Deputy Airport Director, said.

All flights are grounded at the airport at least 2:30 p.m. Meanwhile, passengers are waiting at the airport. Officials are giving them food and water.

ST. PETERSBURG

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Units have responded to at least 115 "low priority" storm-related incidents in the city. Those calls account for downed power lines, tree's, arcing wires and other damage.

As of noon, Thursday, March 31, units reported several major storm-related calls, including a tractor-trailer truck blown over and a stalled elevator with passengers inside.

GULFPORT

High winds knocked down a billboard onto the Oar House Bar & Liquor Store near Gulfport. Employees say about four or five people were inside when the sign crashed down on the west side of the roof. They say no one was hurt.

Down the street the  sign was broken and scattered across 49th St. S. People there say no one was hurt.
