Indie Filmmaker from Dunedin Sets Next Movie In Florida

Adam Bowers is gearing up for his next independent film, and he could use a little help from his friends.

Dunedin filmmaker Adam Bowers is looking for a little help for is upcoming independent movie set in Florida.

"Paperback" is Bowers' second major film undertaking. Production starts in September pending funding efforts. He's already $22,494 to his $39,000 budget goal, according to his Kickstarter fundraising page.

He has until Friday, Aug. 16 to raise the other $16,506. Organic fundraising allows for more artistic liberty. He doesn't have to make the same compromises he'd have to make if he worked with a major movie company, Bowers explained Tuesday from the front porch of his parents' historic home on Victoria Drive.

Bowers, 28, grew up in Dunedin and attended the University of Florida. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking, which he feels is his artistic calling.

He loves being able to showcase stories his home state, Bowers said.

"I just think that Florida is such a unique world and culture, and especially being from here, I am excited to make things in that world and tell the stories about people in that world," he said.

His upcoming film, "Paperback," is a romantic comedy centering on the life of an ordinary pizza cook who met the love of his life despite never having left his college town of Gainesville.

"Not a lot of movies are made here (in Florida)," Bowers said. "And we're making this in Gainesville, which is a city I love for different reason than why I love Dunedin. But no movies are made in Gainesville, basically."

His first feature, "New Low," was completed on a $2,000 budget with the help of his friends in Gainesville, received accolades at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In 2011, Independent Filmmaker Project selected Bowers and 24 other writers and directors to participate in its Emerging Visions program.
