Keys to Awesomeness:  Day is a former member of the local podcast Something Planet. He plays guitar in Best Day Ever, which plays on the last names of bandmate Stuart Best (bass) and his own. Day also shoots a Web video series called One Man Band, which follows Day in a semi-autobiographical manner throughout the North Pinellas area.

How did you get started with music?

I used to perform comedy and poetry at the St. Petersburg College Tarpon Springs campus. One night, I performed a comedy skit and got a good reaction from the crowd. But then some Joe Schmoe got up and played a song — nothing particularly special — and the crowd went absolutely nuts. Another person got up and played on their guitar and the crowd went nuts again! It was then I realized the impact music had on people, and made it my mission to start learning the guitar.

Where can people hear you play?

I'm currently in a band called Best Day Ever and we play in several venues across the Tampa Bay area. I've also been known to pop into the open mic night at the , every now and then, playing my original comedy songs.

What keeps you doing it?

The reaction from the crowd is why I play music. A lot of musicians say "I do this for myself," but I do it for the crowd. Their energy is what drives me. Also, creating is one of the highest forms of experiencing life, and I've always had a strong attraction to music, so it's quite natural.

Who or what are your inspirations?

Here are my three favorite bands: Rammstein, Coldplay, and Chevelle. It's a pretty interesting mix, so I'll let you decide what that means.

How has social networking played a part?

Social networking allows me to share my work with a wide scope of people. Without the good old Internet, I’d be limited to whoever I bump into during the day.

Any advice for budding musicians?

Start by learning your favorite songs, it keeps practice interesting. It helps to pick songs from the alt-rock or pop-rock genres as their guitar arrangements are generally straightforward. And finally, have a goal in mind and work on achieving it.
