Filming Begins for Indie Movie Maker from Dunedin

Adam Bowers, his cast of actors and production crew will be shooting in Gainesville through the end of September.

Dunedin filmmaker Adam Bowers is well on his way to finishing his second major independent movie undertaking.

The Dunedin native, who moved to Los Angeles to pursue a film career, is in Gainesville, where he began shooting Thursday for his upcoming movie "Paperback," a romantic comedy centering on the life of an ordinary pizza cook who met the love of his life despite never having left his college town of Gainesville.

Bowers, 28, his cast of actors and production crew will be shooting in Gainesville through the end of September.

Bowers launched an aggressive online fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to offset production costs. He raised $40,000, exceeding his $39,000 goal on Aug 16, his father Tom Bowers told Patch.

Organic fundraising allows for more artistic liberty, Adam Bowers explained to Patch in August. He said doesn't have to make the same compromises he'd have to make if he worked with a major movie company.

Bowers grew up in Dunedin and attended the University of Florida. He said he loves being able to showcase stories in his home state.

"I just think that Florida is such a unique world and culture, and especially being from here, I am excited to make things in that world and tell the stories about people in that world," he said.

"Not a lot of movies are made here (in Florida)," Bowers said. "And we're making this in Gainesville, which is a city I love for different reason than why I love Dunedin. But no movies are made in Gainesville, basically."

His first feature film, "New Low," was completed on a $2,000 budget with the help of his friends in Gainesville. It received accolades at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In 2011, Independent Filmmaker Project selected Bowers and 24 other writers and directors to participate in its Emerging Visions program.
