Dunedin Bagels & Deli Aims to Corner the Market

The new restaurant at Skinner Boulevard and Main Street is making its mark by serving high-quality food, and lots of it.

Sandwiches and bagels might seem simple to make.

But at , the owners are attempting to spice up traditional breakfast and lunch fare by following a basic business plan: Give customers nothing but the best food, and plenty of it.

"We serve sandwiches with no filler — no lettuce, no tomatoes, just bread and meat," owner Saul Shwarztein says. "They're going to get quality meat piled high, a large sandwich for a fair price."

In addition to the monster sandwiches, which come in single, double and triple sizes, the shop serves a dozen different bagels, including originals such as asiago, pumpernickel and French toast. Spreads run the gamut from chives and lox to honey-pecan and New Mexico chilies.

The shop also offers soups, sides including coleslaw, macaroni salad, potato salad and edamame, and sweet treats such as Key lime pie and forest berry torts.

In keeping with the "keep it simple" theme, coffee comes in one brand and size: a large cup of a Cuban roasted blend.

"If you only do a couple of things, you have to make sure you do them right," Shwarztein says.

Shwarztein opened the shop at the busy intersection of Skinner Boulevard and Main Street in late September after moving to the area from South Florida. He and his wife, Miriam, fell in love with the quiet community, and the longtime restaurateur knew he had to open some kind of food shop in his new home.

Shwarztein was unfazed despite the building's size constraints and lack of a kitchen.

"What some might see as a problem I see as an opportunity," the affable owner admits. "It's all in what you know and what you have the ability to do."

So far, the couple has been able to carve a niche in a town with many existing eateries. The Shwarzteins are up to the challenge.

"We're trying to be a part of this wonderful community," Shwarztein says. "We want people to come here and sit, have a good breakfast or lunch, and be happy."
