Art Gallery Expands to Attract More Patrons, Artists

Owner Mary Lou Meyer owned galleries across the country before settling back at home in Dunedin.

Art has always been in Mary Lou Meyer's blood.

For more than 50 years, she has used her art degree to teach students of all ages, from grade school to college, and she has owned galleries across the country, from Florida to Wyoming to Colorado.

But Dunedin has been Meyer's home, either part-time or full, for almost 25 years, and it’s where she chose to put down roots and become a fixture in the local art scene.

So it comes as no surprise that her shop  has quickly become a favorite with area artists. In fact, she has grown so quickly that she recently moved into a larger location to accommodate the various works she displays.

“I had a gallery down the way for a year, but it was too small,” Meyer says of her previous space in the Independence Square Plaza. “A lot of artists were coming in and wanting to show their works, so we needed a bigger place.”

So far, the move to the new location, which is just a few doors down from the on the corner of County Road 1 and Main Street, has been successful. Her gallery is almost full and has seen an increase in traffic, but Meyer still hopes business will improve.

“It’s been better every week, better every month. But it’s still slow. There are a lot of plazas like this that have businesses sitting empty, so we would love to have more foot traffic in here,” she said.

The gallery itself is a busy place filled with a variety of original works and items, most of them created by local artists.

Watercolors, oils, acrylics and photographs co-mingle with custom chandeliers, jewelry, clocks and sculptures to form a colorful blend of traditional and modern, classic and current pieces, and even an art boutique in the back.

“I still have empty walls and a place up front for a table or two for sculptures, if anyone is interested," she said. "I’m always looking for new things to display.”
