Mural Moments with Dewy Boy-Dogedin

Dewy wasn't your typical Jack Russell Terrier.

Meet Dewy Throdice Kola:

Dewy wasn’t your typical Jack Russell Terrier.  While he was intelligent, charming and energetic, he wasn’t as high strung as most, always waited for permission and never ran out the door without it.  He understood two languages and lived in more places in his nine years than most people ever visit in a lifetime.

He spent his earliest years running free on the beaches of Maui chasing sea birds and small fish in the old Hawaiian tide pond.  He would do this for hours while his dad kite surfed on the North Shore.  From there, he played in the snow and fjords of Norway, often venturing out to run free on the islands nearby when his parents took the boat out.  He and his dad went for a lot of long walks in their time in Norway.

Dewy’s bond with his dad grew stronger during those years.  His dad shares, “Dewy was the rock that was always there for me, unruffled and unflappable, he was always there to lick my face to let me know I was a valued member of the pack.  For that I will always love him dearly…Dewy was my best friend and faithful confidant.”

He was four when he was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease.  While this kept him from being able to run as free as he once had, it did not stop him from having wonderful adventures as he and his family returned to the US to travel coast to coast in their mobile home.

His dad shared one of those adventures, “Once Dewy went after a Longhorn Steer, weaving endlessly in and out from under the large animal’s legs, barking and nipping.  The bull started to lift its feet awkwardly like a woman who had just spotted a mouse, trying desperately to keep away from the mighty whirlwind spinning below him.”

Dewy’s adventures continued as he and his family moved to Florida.  He and his dad would run the Honeymoon Island beaches and halfway into each one, Dewy would end up in the water.

“He would wade up to his shoulders…stand there looking at me as if to say, ‘I remember this Dad, please let me stay here for just a while longer.’  That dog could break my heart with that look…I always let him linger until he seemed ready to leave that salty comfort and the memories of chasing fish in a pond on an island far away.”
