Mural Moments with Purrl at the "House of Dogs" in Dunedin

Meet Purrl from the House of Dogs Mural… 

As a rescued kitten, she was getting into all kinds of trouble in her first home with her littermate.  The first parents had enough quite quickly and that is when her new mom first met her.

She was initially “skittish and scared” according to her mom Nina, and she was also a “bratty, mischievous trouble maker” who stole her mom’s heart.

Purrl’s mom recalls of her first meeting that “Her beautiful, piercing green eyes darted back and forth at us, but eventually she let us pet her and before we knew it, she was also chatting up a storm…”

Nina continues, “She was a very vocal kitty as I would come to know…if you talked to her, she would talk back…She would respond with a dainty meow whenever you called her name…

My favorite part of the night…was when she would wait until I was relaxing on the couch…and come meowing up on top of me to lay down on my chest.  She would put her paw on my finger, purring loudly, and she would stare at me with her green eyes as she slowly drifted to sleep.”

Purrl developed kidney disease and her mom was able to nurse her back to her bratty, mischievous self again for a while, surprising the veterinarians.  For nine months, her mom spoon fed her, gave her daily injections of fluids, medications, and constantly took her to the vet for checkups.In spite of all of this, Purrl continued to express her contentment and gratitude for her mom’s caregiving efforts.  Nina said that Purrl let her know when she was too tired to continue the routine, and Nina loved her enough to understand.

“Purrl taught me how far I was willing to go for someone I cared about…she taught me it’s important to not forget what is best for them…to listen to them, to pay attention…Most of all, Purrl taught me patience…We were in this together.”
