Spice Up Your Life!

If your anything like me, you most likely have a cabinet or two full of dried up spices sitting in canisters.  Some of those spices most likely have to take a beating to shake the contents loose.  At that point it’s usually best to just toss them in the trash. Just another waste of our hard earned money!  Like I previously stated I was looking for a way to become more self-sustaining and less wasteful.  What better way than to create my very own herb and vegetable gardens.

I absolutely enjoy cooking and dreamt of having my very own herb garden. However, as you can see, or may already know my space is very limited with little room to plant.  Rest assured that was not about to stop me. I did have some unwelcoming space that really could use some sprucing up.  Take a look at the before and after, how defined the space has really become.  It truly is urban living at its finest.

This vertical herb garden was constructed with very little effort, just like legos.  I contemplated for months on an Up-Garden, and settled on this great little idea that many have seen on Pinterest sites or alike.  It’s a great idea for adding the right spices I needed for my cooking.  Not to forget to mention a very inexpensive project, right around $60.

It provided a nice barrier as well clean separation of my table set from the rest of my patio / garden area, but still allowing the visibility I so enjoy.  It’s similar to an outdoor living room and a breakfast nook, two separate spaces now.

The cantilevers required the most work but surely not a daunting task.  I placed a piece of wood under each, and traced the shape.  I then cut individual pieces out and gently placed them in through the top where they snugly fit towards the bottom of each cantilever securing the new contents.  I then simply planted my seeds and watched my culinary skills grow as I learned how to cook great foods using the new items it contained.
