Pawn Stranded on C3

The US Chess Federation recognizes Dunedin as one of its newest members. A formulation meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 7th at 5pm at the Dunedin Library.

Pawn Stranded on C3!
By Saul Shwarztein

If you think the word “pawn” is only associated with the word “shop,”  and a “bishop” can only be found in church — well hang on to your rooks Dunedin —  because all of that is about to change!

Thanks to the support of the City, Dunedin’s Arts and Culture Committee, and the work of committee member, Saul Shwarztein, Dunedin was recently awarded membership in the United States Chess Federation. The Federation includes hundreds of chess clubs throughout the nation and is the source of promoting and encouraging the game of chess.

A game, started before 600AD in India, has endured centuries. It can be found in nearly every country on earth, and challenges everyone — no matter how young or how old.  Chess sets can be found in miniature sizes and in those huge chess pieces often seen in parks and city centers (and, yes, one of those huge chess piece sets could soon, hopefully, be on its way to Dunedin for all to use). But wait, we’re getting ahead of ourselves….first, some questions.

What is this game? How do you play? Where are other Dunedin chess players?   These are only a few of the questions that you may have in the first club formulation meeting to be held in our public library on May 7th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., hosted by Saul Shwarztein, (owner of Dunedin Bagels and Deli). Saul will take you “move by move” through the start-up of our very own Dunedin Chess Club.  It is intended to form a City Club, for both adults and children, and establish Dunedin as a great place to play chess.

All are invited to attend and make this happen for Dunedin, and its neighbors.
