Who's Your Sista' Sista'?

Dunedin celebrates its Scottish history in many ways; the Highland Games for sure, but also the 50th anniversary of our sister city, Stirling, Scotland!

Who’s Your Sista’ Sista’?

Did you know we have a “Sister City”?  In fact, we have two Sister Cities.  The oldest, of which this blog is about is Stirling, Scotland (sister-cityhood established 1964).  The other sister city is Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada (sister-cityhood established 2000).

It was President Eisenhower who, in 1956, held a conference on citizen diplomacy.  From that conference was borne the Sister City program “to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation…”  And so next year, 2014, marks the 50th anniversary of our city of Dunedin and her sister city relationship with Stirling, Scotland.  But wait, there’s more.

The Highland Games are coming, the former Provost (say, Mayor) of Stirling is coming, an exhibition of artifacts celebrating the 700th anniversary of one of the greatest battles in Scottish history (the Battle of Bannockburn, June 1314)  is coming…and all of it coming to our Delightful Dunedin!

The Dunedin Historical Society is proud to tie all of these events together in one great presentation.

On April 11th at 11:00am in the Andrews Memorial Chapel, former Provost of Stirling Colin O’Brien will conduct an exciting, interesting and informative presentation on Stirling’s history, our sister city relationship, an insight into the upcoming exhibition, and yes, there’s more!

Entry will be free, but we will welcome any donations in support of the Historical Society.

Now, that, sista’, is a sterling idea!
