Dunedin Public Library Summer Events

All the summer programming you could imagine - going on at your library.

So much is going on at the Dunedin Public Library!  We are gearing up for summer reading programs – for children, teens and adults!  Come pick up a summer calendar or some fliers to find out all the awesome programs we have coming up.  Remember: everything is free at the library.  Thanks to our incredible Dunedin Friends of the Library for sponsoring all of our summer programming!

The adult summer reading program is called “Ground Breaking Reads.”  Liz White, Adult Programming Librarian, has scheduled some creative programs that involve native Florida plants, Florida caves, genealogy, crafts, and rock hounding all culminating in a summer luncheon with Mac Perry who will speak on an archaeological dig in St. Pete.  The adults will have weekly prize drawings for those who sign up.  If you read 7 books this summer, you will get entered into the grand prize drawing!  The best part of summer reading is sharing what you have read with others by writing your own reviews for us to post in the library.

Teen reading is called “Beneath the Surface,” this summer.  Katherine Kastanis, Teen Librarian, will host some paranormal investigators; we’ll have a teen spa night with a certified massage therapist; we’ll investigate caves, camping and cameras; have a supernatural battle; a superhero boot camp and end the summer with a birthday party for our favorite Hogwart’s student, Mr. Potter.  Add in some movies and some game days and you will enjoy a fun filled summer with us at the library!  Read a book, fill out a reading slip – the top reader each week will win a book and the top five readers of the summer will each win a gift card at the Harry Potter Birthday Party.

Teens and kids have an opportunity to “Unearth a Good Book.”  Librarians have wrapped books in brown paper and written details about the books on the wrapping.   Check out a secret book (no peeking til you get it outside the library), read it, fill out a short review and win a prize when you bring it back!  We had a similar program in March to raves from both teens and kids.  Hundreds of books that might never have been read were read to the enjoyment of many patrons!

The children’s summer reading program is called “Dig into Reading.”  We will have our big program guests on Wednesday afternoons at 2PM.  Two hundred free tickets will be given out starting at 1:30PM on program days.  We will be hosting a one man circus, a cartoon party, a play about “Cinderella,” some creepy crawlers and tortoises, and have a drum circle.  We also have scheduled programs on almost every Saturday and movies on almost every Sunday!  Stop by the Youth Department to pick up a detailed calendar.  Get a new reading log every week to keep a record of your summer reading.  When you bring it back, you get a prize.  We will draw for free gift cards each week.   Read with the Rays for cool prizes and to win a free baseball ticket.

The top twenty readers ages 5-12 will be invited to our "Supercalifragelistic" party in August.  It is a special party of fun filled craziness for the kids who put forth the most effort reading this summer.  Last year we had a Willy Wonka party and it was amazing! Read as much as you can and maybe you'll get an invite!

Genealogy help (free) is available at Dunedin Public Library every Thursday, year round, from 1-3pm. No appointment is necessary. Members of Caladesi Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Berkeley Plantation Chapter of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants are on hand to help with general questions or for prospective members. For more information, contact Joan Evans, registrar for DAR, at 727-734-0668 or Anne B. Watkins, registrar for Colonial Dames, at 727-712-9056.

All this and even more is going on at the Dunedin Public Library for the summer.  Stop in and check out a good book.  You might have noticed our new book recommendations carousel located on the online catalog.  Find a good beach read and enjoy yourself!
