GET OUT: Arbor Day, Earth Day and Broadway

Honeymoon Island is THE place to be this weekend. But if you can’t make it to the beach, I found a few other places you’ll want to be. Check out these top weekend picks:

FRIDAY and SATURDAY: Catch some of the most talented Broadway-bound performers in the Tampa Bay area performing some of the most well-known and highly-acclaimed Broadway songs of all time at Friday and Saturday night’s production of "," directed by Nathan Daugherty. The performance begins at 8 p.m. at the Conmy Center at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and features songs from "Rent," "Hair," "Phantom of the Opera," "Wicked" and more. SATURDAY: If you’re a Dunedin resident, you definitely don’t want to miss the 2011 Arbor Day Tree Give-A-Way beginning at 8:30 a.m. at . With proof of Dunedin residency, you’ll have your choice of two FREE trees in three-gallon containers that you can take home and plant in your yard. Choose from red, pink, lavender or white crape myrtle, slash pine, red bottle brush, live oak, Southern magnolia, red maple and bald cypress. Trees will be given on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early. Event ends at noon. For more information contact the at 727-298-3278.

SATURDAY: You can relive the memories of the Highland Games while listening to some great Americana/rock/blues. Drop by the Dunedin Brewery at 8 p.m. to hear Dave Korman and grab a bottle of April-release Highland Games Smoked Porter, a Scottish-American porter with peated malt at 6.4-percent alcohol by volume, while they last!

SATURDAY and SUNDAY: Come learn about the varied natural bio-diversity found at at Island Earth Days, presented by the Friends of the Island Parks. Both days will be filled with live music and entertainment, local eco-vendors, nature walks on the beach and on the osprey trail, nature talks and presentations, kids’ crafts and activities, fine artists, quality crafts, food, beer, wine, rock climbing, rain barrel workshops and, of course, an opportunity to visit Florida’s finest state park. Event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. There’s an $8 donation per vehicle at the gate entrance for up to eight people per vehicle.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: Also taking place this weekend at Honeymoon Island State Park is another two-day fundraising event called the Shark Bite Challenge. This competitive water racing event featuring a variety of water craft is being held in conjunction with Island Earth Days. Saturday features a nine-mile, six-person Hawaiian outrigger canoe race beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, which includes a four-mile and an eight-mile kayak, canoe, surfski, stand up paddle and prone paddleboard race, beginning at 10 a.m. Event is free to watch, but you’ll have to pay the $8 entrance fee per vehicle to get into the park.
