Why Are Dunedin Fire Dept's Wreaths Red?

For every fire that starts because of holiday decorations, a red bulb must be replaced with a white one.

Dunedin firefighters are hoping the community helps keep their holiday wreaths red this year.

Dunedin firefighters are participating in a national Keep the Wreath Red campaign, which promotes fire safety during the holidays. Wreaths with red lights are placed outside each station in Dunedin. For every fire that starts because of holiday decorations, a red bulb must be replaced with a white one, according to fire officials.

Fire officials ask, please “Keep the Wreath Red.” Here are some holiday safety tips from the Dunedin Fire Department:

  1. Unplug holiday lights before leaving home or sleeping.
  2. Be careful with candles and open flames.
  3. Use flame-retardant decorations.
  4. Ensure lights are in good condition and that they are UL listed (look for the marks and labels).
  5. Stay in the kitchen when cooking something on top of the stove or when grilling or broiling food.
  6. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, woodstoves, etc.
  7. Replace damaged electrical or extension cords.
  8. Never use the oven or stovetop to heat a home.
  9. Keep real Christmas trees watered.                                              
  10. Don't put a live Christmas tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks.
  11. Avoid using lighted candles.
