City Loses Half Million Gallons from Water Tower Shot Tuesday

City officials estimate 550,000 gallons water were lost from the reclaimed water tower damaged during a Dunedin man's golf cart shooting spree early Tuesday at Dunedin Golf Club.

OUTSIDE CLEARWATER, FL -- City officials estimate 550,000 gallons were lost from a reclaimed water tower damaged during a golf cart shooting spree early Tuesday at local golf club.

The 200-foot city water tower just south of Curlew Road, near the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard, was struck by a with two weapons during the early morning hours, according to a Pinellas County Sheriff's news release.

Passing motorists reported water spurting from the tank and tiny droplets on their windshield.

Fitzegerald, who showed signs of impairment, told deputies he was looking for his dog and was carrying weapons for protection against coyotes.

The water tower has been drained so it can undergo repairs, Courtney King, city spokeswoman, said. The water is used for irrigation; not for drinking, she said.

Officials are unsure of the extent of the damage or how long it will take to repair the tank.

King said the city will have to notify regulatory agencies and the city's risk and safety office, inspect the tank for damage and weld a patch over any holes.

"Without knowing full extent of damage it is hard to price. After assessment and inspection are complete a cost can be better determined. Certainly we lost the water in the tank, plus possibly some lost sales of reclaimed water, plus inspection, cleaning, repairs, etc.," she wrote in an email to media.

King said Dunedin Golf Club is the primary customer served from that tank.

Immediate impact to water customers should be minimal.

The city has three other working water tanks at optimal levels, she said.

My wife and I will be moving to Dunedin in a couple of years. Are there a lot of water tower shootings in the area?

No, it is overall a safe town. We just have lots of Dollar General Stores that are locating into neighborhoods as opposed to mail commercial streets. Do your due diligence before purchasing. Welcome!

You really think he has sufficient funds for these types of repairs? At minimum, very minimum you are looking at a five figure repair and more likely a six figure repair. PUULLLEEAAASE!!! Nope, we will be stuck with this repair out of either an insurance policy the city carries (read rate increases) or directly out of the city coffers. Dunedin definitely does have coyotes; oddly enough there are no reports of them ever being spotted around the tops of our very tall water towers! Wonder what on earth he was thinking???

Redefining the term "Tower Shooter".... standing his ground against a perceived threat. Really. Guess we are lucky he didn't also shoot some children or golfers while on this little armed vigilante spree. Glad he is not my neighbor...

Florida is a "stand your ground state". Presumably this gentleman was just protecting himself from an aggressive tower. Justifiable towercide.

they will have to drain the tank, repair it, then refill the tank.

I am a mobile welding buisness from Bradenton, Fl. I can do those repairs and inspections within a four digit budget. Call me.

Since my wife and I are neither watertowers nor plan on living in one when we move to Dunedin I think we'll be safe. Also, don't like playing golf so won't be close to the golf course. LOL

Thanks Cecilia, We've recently purchased a condo in Dunedin and just waiting until I retire from the Army to move there.
John Dolac December 15, 2012 at 12:58 AM
LOL. Although perhaps a coyote had climbed the water tower?
