Commissioners Select Barnette's Replacement as Vice Mayor Tonight

Dunedin Vice Mayor Ron Barnette will hand over his seat Thursday after the city commission makes a selection. The seat is rotated annually, according to a recent Charter amendment.

Ron Barnette's reign as vice mayor is over — for now, at least.

The Dunedin City Commission, in its first regular meeting as a group since the November election, selects a new vice mayor Thursday.

All eligible commissioners are women.

Once selected, the next vice mayor's term is effective immediately. She would serve until Nov. 21, 2013, according to the City Charter, and act in place of Mayor Dave Eggers in the case of his absence.

Although the vice mayoral position has traditionally been rotated each year, a city amendment passed on Nov. 6 made the practice an official requirement.

Barnette replaced ex-Commissioner David Carson as vice mayor last year.
