Douglas Avenue Intersection Safer Without Stoplight

An aged traffic signal was replaced with a four-way stop after a car crash, making the intersection at Union Street and Douglas Avenue much safer, officials say.

The traffic light was already broken by the time Richard Closson showed up for the first day on his job as a crossing guard in September.

But from what Closson hears from his regulars, the Union Street and Douglas Avenue intersection he patrols is safer with stop signs and not the traffic signal that broke as a result of a car crash.

Officials in both cities agree. And they do not plan to replace the aged signal.

Anyway, said Paul Bertels, Clearwater's director of traffic, the new lights are too tall and could come too close to the power lines there. Also, not enough drivers use the road, even at its busiest, to warrant a new signal.

“When spring training happens this year for the , we will look at it and make sure there are no problems," Bertels said.

About three accidents each year occur at the intersection said Bertels.

Joan Rice, a Dunedin traffic engineer, said she did not think there would be any issues.

Just in case, though, the electrical cabinet and concrete foundation on the south west corner will remain until after spring training.

“We’re glad to see that it went to a four-way stop," Rice said. "The signal had some issues where accidents did occur. It seems like there is a little more control with the four-way stop."

Closson said traffic seems to move just fine during the mornings and afternoons at his post.

"Not having known this stop light, I find this more usable for this corner," Closson said.
