$480K Repairs to Save Dunedin Marina Seawalls

A roughly six-month project repairs and replaces aging seawalls at the Dunedin Municipal Marina starting in July.

Some of the seawalls at Dunedin Municipal Marina will soon be revamped.

Dunedin leaders awarded nearly $481,000 to a Tampa-based contractor for a roughly six-month rehabilitation project on the city's aging north, east and south seawalls, which are believed to date back to the 1950s.

The repairs mean "saving the marina," Doug Hutchens, public works director, told city leaders during a June 6 commission meeting.

The project is replacing the concrete at the top of the seawall, repairing places where rebar is exposed or concrete is chipped or cracked, replacing timber decks and concrete sidewalks, and repaving some of the roads around the marina.

Hutchens told city officials he hopes to begin work on the project in July so the work does not disrupt plans for the Dunedin Holiday Boat Parade in December.

Some boats will be moved to Clearwater for the duration of the project, Hutchens said.

The $480,643 price tag that contractor George G. Solar & Company, Inc., proposed was the "lowest cost, responsive and responsible bid," according to city records. It was the only bid out of six to come in under the city's $502,200 project cost estimate. City records also note that George G. Solar & Company completed "satisfactory" work at the stadium in the past.
