Dunedin's Little Free Library Is Growing!

There soon will be more Little Free Libraries throughout Dunedin.

The Little Free Library in Dunedin is expanding.

Library Director Phyllis Gorshe confirmed Friday that residents soon will see more of the whimsical little houses where people can pick up and drop off books – for free.

The little library perched on a pole next to the Pinellas Trail has been so popular with local readers that other individuals and organizations have stepped forward to sponsor additional Little Free Libraries in town.

The Dunedin Youth Guild plans to sponsor a Little Free Library in Weaver Park by the new playground. The Rotary Club wants to install one by the MLK Center. And Commissioner Ron Barnette plans to sponsor a Little Free Library, as well.

"The idea has really caught on," said Gorshe, who stocked the original Little Free Library with 26 books the first day it opened to the public. When she checked back the next morning, there were only six left.

Now people have caught on to the idea of taking – and leaving – books. The titles and choices never fail to delight passersby.

Gorshe said that people seem to put some thought into the titles left behind – for children and adults. "Creative Thinking With Wine" was one book that caught the Library Director's attention, but she left it for someone else to savor and enjoy.

Meanwhile, Dunedin's Free Little Library is taking part in a Pinterest "film festival" that encourages communities with these miniature libraries to take a video of their pride and joy and pin it to Pinterest. There is quite a collection.

Take a look at the Dunedin video and then cast your vote. Today, Friday, June 21, is the final day to vote! Just go to LittleFreeLibrary.org, and follow the easy-to-use instructions. Or simply click on this link, which takes you to the film festival on Pinterest.
