Five Things We Hope You Didn't Miss

Here are five things that made news in Dunedin the past week that we hope you didn't miss.

In an emotional, sometimes raucous, sometimes unruly Dunedin City Commission meeting, the commission, after hours of discussion and some 40 residents speaking, decided not to reopen Patrica Avenue to through traffic.

However, the commission did not kill the topic. Instead, the commission asked city staff to take a month to study the issue further and to come back with additional solutions and options to the issue.

Discussion on reopening Patricia Avenue will resume at the Nov. 17 commission meeting.

A new parking lot near the  will add 88 parking spots for a busy downtown area.

The city negotiated with a private owner of an empty lot to create a much-needed parking area that is also accessible to the Pinellas Trail.

The parking lot is located at 400 Douglas Ave, said Trevor Davis, Dunedin's special projects coordinator. It is in the vacant lot where Keller Engineering once stood.

Dr. Jay Coisman and his family drove from Gainesville to help release his first sea turtle amputee back into the wild Monday morning.

Rebel, a young, endangered Kemp's ridley, was found injured in the Egmont Key shipping channel in May. He had massive boat strike wounds on the left part of his shell and flipper. His flipper was in such bad condition that it had to be removed.

"Certainly the first time I've ever done one," Coisman said. "It happens, but he recovered quite well and we're ready to go."

No doubt, every bride-to-be probably has some sort of fear about her upcoming wedding; maybe her dress won't fit right, or perhaps the cake won't arrive on time, or even worse, maybe the groom won't show up for the wedding.

Of all the possible fears of a bride-to-be, Ann Steinbrook probably never thought her and her fiancee's cute and wiggly four month-old Boxer-mix puppy would mess up her wedding. But, it almost happened.

The drama unfolded one evening in August. Ann arrived home at the Dunedin apartment she shares with her fiancee Christopher and their puppy Kailey. Ann fed Kailey a few treats, then took a shower, which was their normal routine. A while later, Ann could not find her engagement ring. She checked the kitchen counter and the bathroom counter -the only two locations that she places her ring whenever she takes it off- but there was no ring in sight.

When the World Series begins tonight in St. Louis when the American League champion Texas Rangers face the host National League pennant-winning Cardinals, the starting pitcher from the Cardinals has a direct connections to Dunedin.

The series pits the Texas Rangers, in just their second Fall Classic looking to win their first World Series against the royalty of the National League, the Cardinals, in their 18th World Series looking to win their 11 title. Only the New York Yankees have appeared in or won more World Series than the Cardinals.

So when the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter takes the mound to start the game, longtime fans of the Dunedin Blue Jays just may remember him. Those fans may have to have pretty good memories because in his time here, Carpenter put up pretty pedestrian numbers.
