Weaver Park Playground Idea Receives Up to $200,000 Donation

A proposed playground at Dunedin's J.C. Weaver Park would be built to reflect the trees, ants, caterpillars and butterflies that capture children's imaginations.

It would be designed with accessibility in mind for all disabilities. It would also have colorful, child-friendly signs teaching kids about the environment, and it blends into its natural surroundings, the city says. 

And the Dunedin Youth Guild is ready to donate up to $200,000 to make it happen, according to Vince Gizzi, parks and recreation director.

City leaders will weigh in on accepting the large donation Thursday, Feb. 7, at City Hall.

According to city documents, the Dunedin Youth Guild received a large donation from Tom and Nan Moffatt and was looking for a project it saw as fitting. Members of the group met with city staff and conceptual plans were presented at a Youth Guild meeting on Jan. 15. 

Dunedin purchased the Weaver land in 2008. Sandwiched between the Pinellas Trail and the scenic waterside views of St. Joseph Sound, it has been developed in recent years to include a fishing pier, bicycle and pedestrian trails, picnic shelters and a restroom facility.

The public can attend Thursday's meeting at Dunedin City Hall or watch the meeting live beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Dunedin TV on Channel 615 for Bright House customers or Channel 15 for Knology and Verizon customers.
