On the list: Dunedin Rotary Club Foundation, Rotary International, Dunedin Lions Club.

Nearly 30 Dunedin organizations have had their tax exemption status revoked.

The Dunedin organizations are among 275,000 nonprofits nationwide that did not meet new legal requirements to file annual tax forms, the I.R.S. announced Wednesday.

The New York Times reported this week that I.R.S. officials couldn't get in touch with organizations on the list and believe that they are no longer operating.

Tax records indicate that an organization filed as the Dunedin Rotary Club Foundation, Inc., which also shares the same address but lists a different tax identification number than the one on the I.R.S. list, had a revenue of $47,979 in 2009.

According to the New York Times report, organizations with annual revenue less than $25,000 were not required to file, up until requirements in a federal law — the Pension Protection Act — changed in 2006.

The Act “required all organizations to file returns, but because it was embedded in 393 pages of a law that otherwise dealt with pension issues, many nonprofit groups did not know that,” the New York Times reports.

The I.R.S. said that a process is in place (including a reduced application fee) if nonprofit groups on the list want to reapply for tax exemption status, the New York Times reports.
