Little League Eyes December Open for Concession Stand

City officials say the roughly $89,700 improvements on a Fisher Field concession stand should be complete.

Come December, the concession stand at Fisher Field should be open for business again, according to city officials.

Tom Burke, city engineer, said the commission's approval for roughly $29,000 toward the final phase of the concession stand's restoration Thursday should be enough to make sure contractor Stamper Construction, Inc., can complete it by December.

Once complete, the roughly $89,700 project adds improved access, a fresh paint job, upgraded electrical system for some new concession equipment, and refurbished restroom facilities.

Specifically, the last phase pays for:

  • Reconstruction of the roof for a new exhaust hood ($3,053)
  • Electrical design for new concession equipment ($1,408)
  • Installation of upgraded electric service ($5,730)
  • Air conditioning ($3,339)
  • Ceilings in concession and office rooms ($7,784)
  • Replacement of water supply pipe and water heater ($3,754)
  • Construction of divider walls in concession room ($776)
  • Replacement of restroom toilet partitions ($3,150)

Mayor Dave Eggers said everyone seems pleased with the price tag and project.

An earlier design, which included a two-story structure, would have been much more costly and time consuming. This restoration project will suit the Little League’s needs until the Highland Park Master Plan is budgeted in about five or six years, he added. A new concession area will be constructed as part of the master plan in a different part of the property.

Burke said staff plans to eventually expand the renovated concession building to include a new multi-purpose room to include a first aid station, Little League storage and umpire changing areas. Staff expects to present a plan for the expansion in the next 12 months, he added. There are no preliminary estimates as to its cost.
