Meeting Notes: City Commission Talks Trash and Hiring

Notes from the City Commissioners meeting on Feb. 3.

Here are some significant notes and things on Patch's radar from the Feb. 3 City Commissioners meeting:

  • The City Commission decided to allow the Solid Waste Division to scale back yard waste pickup to one day a week starting Oct. 1. Right now, yard waste and other large materials are picked up twice a week, but Kessler Consulting in Tampa, which studied Dunedin's solid waste for nine months, found that reducing yard waste pickup to one day a week would save the city $132,000 per year. The Solid Waste Division will begin a process of rebalancing its staffing and truck routes to be more efficient and also begin the process of educating, marketing and communicating the changes and how they will impact individual customers.
  • The Commission appointed Carmela Febo as acting city clerk. Febo, a member of the city's Attorney's Office, is being made available by the law firm to fill the temporary void after the previous city clerk resigned in January. She will spend part of her time in the City's office and part of her time in the law office. The City Commission will discuss the recruitment process and timeframe for hiring a permanent City Clerk at its Commission Workshop on Thursday, Feb. 10.
  • Approved a motion to begin the recruitment process for hiring a new piping director at . The current piping director will retire at the end of the school year.
  • Commissioner Julie Ward Bujalski is working on pushing statewide legislation for requiring background checks for volunteer youth coaches.
