Memorial Relocation Will Add Downtown Parking, Officials Say

Officials decided on Thursday (May 3) that a stone VFW memorial in the Dunedin Marina parking lot will be moved 100 feet east for $8,600.

The city is moving a stone memorial from a parking lot to make way for more parking spaces at Dunedin Marina, officials agreed at last week's commission meeting.

The project costs an estimated $8,600.

The asphalt parking lot that developed around the distinct stone Veterans of Foreign Wars memorial at is not an appropriate place for it any longer, city staff proposed Thursday.

So officials agreed to move it about 100 feet east, nearer to the flag pole inside .

The relocation would open up two parking spaces inside the marina lot.

The stone memorial, built of stones from each state, was constructed on the site in 1970 to honor all those who served in the United States military. The parking lot developed around it over the years, officials say.

The move is tentatively scheduled to be finished in time for Veterans Day.

The relocation itself costs $5,000, which would come from Community Redevelopment Agency’s parking improvement fund, according to city documents. The memorial’s new foundation, lighting, pavers and curbing would run an estimated $3,600. That cost would be deducted from Penny for Pinellas funds, according to city documents.
