New Qualifying Deadline for City Candidates

Candidates wishing to join the city commissioners race have a new qualifying deadline. It was moved up so that Dunedin did not miss the county deadline for submitting ballot language.

Leaders officially moved the qualifying deadline for the city election 10 days sooner than the original date, commissioners voted Thursday.

The new qualifying period to July 16 through noon on July 30.

City Clerk Denise Schlegel told commissioners earlier this month that keeping the original dates would cause Dunedin to miss the Pinellas County Supervisor of Election's ballot language deadline (Aug. 3). (The original qualifying period was July 30 through noon on Aug. 13.) The election is on Nov. 6.

Schlegel has said that she would like to revisit the qualifying deadline again after the election. She wants Dunedin's qualifying period to parallel the state, federal and county deadlines, which is the 155th to the 151st day before the election. (It fell on June 4 and 8 this year.)
