Successful Start to Single-Stream Recycling, City Says

The city's new single-stream recycling program launched this month with high participation numbers.

Citywide, curbside single-stream recycling participation was high during the program's launch week.

Participation was so high, contractors said, that additional recycling trucks had to be called for overloaded containers and because drivers were learning new routes, according to Dunedin's Green Speak e-newsletter.

Participation numbers are reported between 60 and 80 percent, the e-newsletter says.

Dunedin residents received their 65-gallon, single-stream recycling carts in September. The program began Oct. 1 for 13,000 residents.

Recyclables, including glass, plastic and cardboard, are picked up once a week, in the same bin,on the same day as residents' yard debris and bulk materials. Check the city's schedule for curbside recycling pick-up, if you are unsure of your designated day.

The cost for recycling is included as a part of residents' trash bills; the current, monthly $2.79 fee for recycling goes away.

Regular, twice-a-week garbage pickup remains unchanged.

Those who live in multi-family condo communities and business owners who currently pay the city for recycling services aren't eligible to have the new recycling as part of their trash bills, according to Public Works Director Doug Hutchens during a recent city meeting. However, they're welcome to shop around or receive a favorable rate from the city's contractor, Hutchens said.
