Falcons Bring Home Two State Titles

Dunedin High School had but one state champion in wrestling in the school's history, that happened in 1975. Saturday, the Falcons doubled that number of titles with two wrestlers winning their weight class in the FHSAA state tournament held in Lakeland.

Since Dunedin High School has had a wrestling program, it has only had one state champion and that came in 1975.

In just one day, the Falcons doubled that number.

Clarence Arrington, wrestling at 120-pounds, and Kyle Goodnow, wrestling at 170-pounds, became the second and third state champion, respectively, in Dunedin wrestling history by capturing their weight classes.

"We haven't had a state champ since 1975 and only had one [in school history]," Falcons wrestling coach Marc Allison said. "So having two [champions] is pretty significant."

Both Arrington and Goodnow overcame key semifinal matches to get to the championship. Arrington had faced his semifinal opponent earlier in the season and Allison noted Arrington make necessary adjustments in order to stay a step ahead of his opponent.

Goodnow beat the state's top-ranked wrestler in the semifinals to advance to the championship round, winning with four seconds left in overtime for a 3-0 decision.
