Female Marathon Runners to Storm Downtown St. Petersburg Sunday

Move over boys, it's girl power. Sunday morning, the streets will be filled downtown with women marathon runners.

Sunday morning is the Women's Half-Marathon and 5k, which will wind through the streets of downtown. Start and finish for the course will be in front of the Mahaffey Theater on the waterfront.

The course runs along the waterfront up through Snell Isle to 54th Ave. North back down the same way before meandering around Mirror Lake, Central Ave. and Tropicana Field before heading back downtown.

As a result, there will be significant road closures both downtown and north and west of downtown.

The half-marathon, roughly 13 miles, is also open to men but only women can win the awards. Thousands of runners will be involved.

The race is sponsored by Team in Training, which uses the proceeds to raise thousands of dollars in an effort to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

In 2009, the women's half-marathon tour raised over $1 million for its charitable causes.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishes in 13 categories from under-15 to over-70. Each person who finishes the half-marathon gets a medal.

St. Petersburg officials note that residents near the race course who park on-street need to remove their vehicles by 5 a.m. Sunday or risk having their vehicles ticketed or towed.
