Janine Munns wasn't kidding when she said everyone is considered a member of San Jose Elementary's Green Team.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection struck up a friendly competition among Pinellas County Schools to see which could collect the most recyclable paper in March as part of its annual commemoration of Earth Day (April 22).
Dunedin's own — with 5,712 pounds — was awarded on April 20 for collecting more paper than any other school in the county, according to a DEP news release.
"We recycled three times what we normally do," Munns, school family and community liaison, wrote in an email to the city last week. "We just gave it our best effort and we all had so much fun!"
All the students receive Florida State Parks passes.
San Jose has been named the most energy-efficient elementary school in Pinellas County for the past two years. It has a student club called the Green Team, made up of about 60 students, which is spearheading a schoolwide initiative to .
“Our school is considered one green team,” Munns said in March.
