School Rezoning Up for Final Vote Today

Students at two local elementary schools would be affected if the school board approves boundary changes for 2012-13.

Boundaries for 27 elementary school districts in Pinellas County are poised to be redrawn if the school board gives final approval to a 2012-13 rezoning plan at today's meeting.

Students at Dunedin and San Jose elementary schools would be affected if the rezoning proposal is approved. At , Eric Keaton was among parents who spoke out against the plan. His son currently attends Ozona Elementary but would be zoned for San Jose if the proposal is approved.

"Ozona Elementary is an A school. I have high expectations for my kids that they're going to earn A's. Why would I want to take them out of an A school?" Keaton asked the board. "It should be my choice where they go to school. We pay the property taxes; we direct you to make the right decision. So I'm asking you to make the right decision."

District officials say the changes are necessary because of crowding at many county elementary schools, including Ozona.
