Big League Visits Shriners Hospitals for Children

A day after their bus broke down in Georgia, District 12 Big Leaguers from Dunedin, Largo, Clearwater and Palm Harbor headed to Shriners Hospitals in Greenville, SC, to sign autographs for kids before their World Series appearance on Thursday.

The Distict 12 team — comprised of players from Dunedin, Largo, Clearwater and Palm Harbor — spent Tuesday autographing baseballs for young patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Greenville, SC, which is about 11 miles from where they are staying in Easley. 

Shriners Hosptials for Children specializes in pediatric burn care, cleft lip and palate, and orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal disorders, diseases and injuries.

The District 12 host mom shared a team photo outside the hospital with the players' parents in Florida on Tuesday. 

District 12 is representing Florida and the entire Southeast region in the Big League World Series in Easley, SC. The team plays its first World Series game on Thursday against Indiana, representing the Central states. District 12 All-Stars clinched its spot in the tournament on July 10 after defeating South Carolina in the Regional title game.

District 12 is still accepting financial contributions to offset the unanticipated cost of attending the World Series. Little League picked up flight and transportation expenses to and from Easely, but not the cost of some food, luggage, equipment, etc. The Shriners visit and van rental came out of the District 12 team fund. 

So far, a Palm Harbor construction company donated $2,000 and the City of Dunedin contributed $500, but the team is still about $2,445 shy of its $5,000 goal.
