Big Snook Move In, Outdoors Show Highlights Weekend

Capt. Bill Miller lets Dunedin-area anglers know what might be worth targeting this weekend, and the Florida Sportsman Magazine outdoors show kicks off Saturday and Sunday at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Saltwater Scene

Small speckled trout reportedly are plentiful on the deep flats, along with some decent Spanish mackerel, snapper and ladyfish.

Breaking fish, including, Spanish mackerel, tons of ladyfish, a few false albacore, and sharks, reportedly are bustin baits off the beaches.

Some big snook have reported to come into the area. Many snook are moving away from the passes and onto the flats, preparing for their eventual move to their winter, backcountry holes.

Capt. Bill Miller said Spanish mackerel are everywhere and can be caught trolling spoons or with bait. Also, mangrove snapper are in full spawning mode and can be caught around bridges such as the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and rock piles, seawalls and structure all over Tampa Bay.

Captain's Tip

The Florida Antique Tackle Collectors Club is having a show Oct 7 to 9 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel East in Tampa.

“If you are interested in old and antique fishing tackle you will want to attend this show,” Miller said.

On Saturday, a paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking instructional and safety course will be held at the Gandy Boat Ramp from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It is being put on by United States Coast Guard Auxillary Flotilla 79.
